Why Do We Not Watch Films With Female Leads?

2017 started on a bright note for Bollywood with leading ladies getting a fair share of limelight. The roles were meatier, the screenspace was huge and the production houses willing to spend bucks on marekting the film. But neither of these films managed to send the producers laughing to the banks. While Taapsee Pannu's role was well appreciated by critics; there was talks that the direction of the film let her down. Vidya Balan stood out in yet another eclectic performance but her movie, Begum Jaan, managed only to make a decent opening.

Here's a look at other movies with women centric leads that didn't manage to disturb the BO

Phillauri: Born under an unlucky star, Kanan is told he must marry a tree before he can wed his childhood sweetheart, as the ritual will cleanse him of his bad luck. Grudgingly, he agrees. To his shock, he finds himself being trailed by an unearthly spirit known as Shashi, who used to live in the tree. The bewildered spirit now finds herself trapped in the human realm, and Kanan must help her return to her own realm.

Noor: A journalist's life takes a dramatic turn when she comes across an eye-opening investigative news story.

Naam Shabana: Shabana Khan (Taapsee) is the special agent who is entrusted the task of assassinating a deadly arms dealer(Prithviraj) by the Indian Intelligence Agencies.

Poorna:  Based on the true story of a 13-year-old Adivasi from Telangana who became the youngest girl in history to climb Mount Everest.

Begum Jaan: On the eve of Independence, the chairman of the Border Commission, Sir Cyril Radcliffe decides to divide India and Pakistan into equitable halves. What the administration doesn’t account for is the line running through the middle of Begum Jaan’s(Vidya Balan) brothel situated plonk on the border; with one half falling in India and the other in Pakistan.

Why Do You Think Women Centric Films Don't Work In Bollywood? Can You Remember A Popular Film Which Had An Actress In The Helm Of Affairs?

Ritvik Baweja BAL BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (PITAM PUR

I agree that women centric films are finding it difficult in Bollywood, and the society is still continue to favour the patriarchal mindset. even though we say that we live in an developed society but the truth is that the people admire men based fictional and non fictional characters even though they don''t spread any positive message. Till this mindset prevails nothing could be improved

A Popular Film Which Had An Actress In The Helm Of Affairs was Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

Devika Singh DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL GURGAON SEC45 D

I do not want to insult or mean to disrespect anyone but except for phillauri and poorna, I do not think any of the above listed movies had a strong plot so as to do well at box office.

Pallavi singh PRESENTATION CONVENT(RED FORT)

It is due to patriarchal mindset of people in India . From the beginning mindsets are framed in such a manner that one wants to see men as leading in every movie as a protagonist , as a masculine kind hero.Things are changing bit by bit but it will take years to come out of this patriarchy.

People still carry the discrimination in mind . Women Centric Films do work in bollywood .

Savani Sawaikar VIDYA VALLEY

The Society''s way of thinking is a drawback for every such movie. If this goes on like this then the discrimination which was overcome would be back in the Bollywood blaze lowering the chances of gender equality on set. Public, think before it''s too late...

Abhirami Gangadharan AMRITA VIDYALAYAM, PERAMBAVOOR

There is nothing like that.Female centric movies are also getting good support from the audience.Movies depends on the plot. But at some point,I agree that female action movies are not too good to watch as it looks a bit artificial.

P.S Geethanjali Nalanda Vidya Niketan, Vijayawada

We do watch women-centric films but only some become a hit. Most of the women centric films have failed as they lack a plot.Films like Queen,Mardaani, English Vinglish,Fashion,Mother India,Pink,Mary Mom,Chak de! India etc.. all are hits and are women centric films. What more? Films like Neeraja,Queen, Black,Bandit queen all won national awards. We can''t say that all the women-centric films are flops at Box-office.Most of them which have a good plot are a hit like Dangal.

Well, the credit goes to the patriarchal society of our country. Though we are getting advanced scientifically, but still our minds live in the old times. It is excruciatingly depressing that women still in our country are forced to work in the kitchen and should stay 24X7 in the four walls. Bollywood which used to be an epitome for our society sadly traced the same path as very few movies with a female protagonist came up and that too due people''s orthodox thinking didn''t cut the mustard.

I don''t agree, the success of a film at box-office has nothing to do with leading actor be a man or woman. If this was the case how would DANGLE hit at the box office.

Aadrit Banerjee Apeejay School Salt Lake

I don''t think women centric films don''t work... because films like Kahaani have been really hits. Actually it is the plot that matters the most but obviously there are some stereotypes that are responsible for the failure of women centric films...

Aditya Gulati MCL SARSWATI BAL MANDIR SCHOOL

I agree that this thing is happen in our society. This is because people are still discriminating on basis of gender but not all people do this. There are people also who do not discriminate at all and they watched all these films. And this discrimination must be removed to build a good society.Without this a perfect society never be made.

When people pay to watch a movie, they want to watch a good movie, a good script, good actors and ultimately good songs ! They want to laugh out loud. cry for sometime . Finally leave with a very good message it does not actually matter much if the film is women Centric but many people do have conservative thoughts , they find a movie without a hero is worthless but time is changing We look at movies pretty differently now.

Akshita Pandey LILAVATI BAI PODAR (A)-SCRUZ

People think that male actors as the lead role will do a good job than female actors as the lead role. Why do people think like that? I strongly believe that they should change their thoughts. Except movies like Phillauri, Begum Jaan, Naam Shabana and Noor, I feel movies like English Vinglish and Dangal have female charatcters as their main role.

Ayushi Pandey LILAVATI BAI PODAR (A)-SCRUZ

I don''t understand why women-centric films are not connecting with the audience, be it Phillauri, Begum Jaan or Noor. Such films with great heroines are failing to create magic on the box-office and in people''s hearts. Then what kind of women empowerment are we talking about? Should we really pass on the baton of the lead role to females if this continues?

Yasmin Tabbassum SHERWOOD CONVENT SCHOOL(D L F)

I don''t agree with these statements because there were marvelous movies at box office from beginning of 2016 till the end of the year which earned a lot and innovated citizens with having women as the lead roles such as Dangal,Pink,Neerja and many more.

Sandhya Srinivas TRIVENI PUBLIC SCHOOL

women leads are good usually like poorna which i liked a lot...there is nothing like we don''t watch. ☺

Sandhya Srinivas TRIVENI PUBLIC SCHOOL
