The Statesman Who Stayed ‘Atal’ Till His Last

Maut ki umar kyaa hai? do pal bhi nahi,
Zindagi silsila, aaj kal ki nahi
Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s, poem

Former pm and BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee  passes away at 93, in Delhi

The man: Born in a humble school teacher’s family on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, Vajpayee entered politics during the Quit India movement in 1942. He did his graduation and post graduation in political science from Victoria College in Gwalior.

Distinguished Parliamentarian: His parliamentary career spanned five decades. He was elected a Lok Sabha MP 10 times, and a Rajya Sabha MP twice.

PM thrice: Vajpayee has been PM of India thrice. His first term, which began in May 1996, was very short-lived. It began on May 16 and ended on May 31. His second began in 1998, but ended after 13 months when the late former Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa withdrew her support to the ruling coalition. The Vajpayee government lost the vote of confidence by one vote. This is the only government at the Centre to have lost a confidence vote.  His third began in 1999, and lasted for a full term of five years, in the process he became  the first non-Congress PM to serve a full five year  term.

Major achievements: His tenure witnessed India’s second nuclear test at Pokhran on May 11, 1998. A spate of sanctions by the US and other countries followed. After the nuclear test, Vajpayee reached out to Pakistan through the Lahore bus diplomacy in February 1999. However, just three months later, Pakistan attacked India in May 1999, leading to the Kargil war. Vajpayee, once again, made a tryst with peace by inviting Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf — who was the Army chief when the neighbouring country had started the Kargil war — for a summit at Agra in July 2001. The summit ended in failure. He was the first person to give a speech in Hindi at the UN General Assembly in 1977. He served as India’s Minister of External Affairs at that time.

Apart from being a statesman of global repute, Atalji is also well known for his excellent oratory skills. His fiery speeches, laced with wit and humour, often used to leave his opponents and supporters equally spellbound whenever he chose to express his views on pressing issues inside Parliament or at open forums.
