Mother Of All Dialogues. Can You Add To The List

Be it a speech, debate, comedy or a remake — there is a maa-wali line that goes with every occasion. B-wood stars tell they miss these dialogues in modern day films

Maa Tum Kitni Acch Ho

Most dialogues on ‘mummiyan’ are serious and have a very high impact on the audience. My favourite pick is “Mom, you are very nice.” Being a mother myself, I have realised that the kind of sacrifice and the immense love that a mother can show towards her child is unparalleled. I feel no dialogue can ever justify the role of the mother. The one thing I use on my mom and it works every time is — Maa... I am hangry! She goes into a tizzy and starts preparing a meal!

- Madhuri Dixit

Maa Mujhe Ashirwad De

The role of the mother on screen has been sidelined these days, but they will be back with a bang like in the 70s and 80s. My vote for the best dialogue is “please bless me Mom” (the Hindi translation is given above). Where would we all be without it? The other one that I dote on is “maa ke haath ka jaadu” (there is magic in a mother’s hand). My mom is an excellent cook, I make sure to tell her this each time she makes my favourite dish. The one universal dialogue that we must tell our moms — ‘I love you’.

- Radhika Apte

Tumhari Maa, mere kabze mein hai...

This is a quintessential Bollywood dialogue, the most defining feature of movies of yore. These words have been used by the antagonist and also by the protagonist, where he kidnaps the mother but keeps her well. For me, this is the beauty of the dialogue — it can mean  different things in different contexts. It is sad that we don’t have such punch lines for mothers on screen these days.

- Ishaan Khattar

Akhtar On The Birth Of Mere Paas Maa Hai

I feel proud to be associated with this (punch)line from the 1979 superhit ‘Deewar’. I have never been attached to my dialogues. But this is something I hold very close to my heart. Salim and I knew we had to come up with something very dramatic for the scene where the brothers were meeting for the last time. We created 534 lines for this moment before mere paas.... came to our mind. It was spiritual, as if the line presented itself to us. Both of us were pleased but none of us had imagined that this punchline would be used in so many more films, theatre, speeches, comedy circuits etc. I am proud of it!

- Javed Akhtar
