ISRO's GSLV Launch: 10 Things To Know

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch the rocket GSLV-F-Zero-Five carrying an advanced weather satellite 'INSAT-3DR' on Thursday at 4.10 pm from the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota. Here is all about the big launch:
  • The GSLV launch will take place at 4.10 pm from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
  • What is GSLV?
GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) are the satellite-launch vehicles (rockets). GSLV is a three-stage launch vehicle and a cryogenic engine is used in the third or upper stage.  GSLV-F05 is the flight in which the indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) will be carried on-board for the fourth time during a GSLV flight.
  • What are Cryogenic engines?
Cryogenic engines use liquid hydrogen as fuel and liquid oxygen as oxidizer to burn the fuel. It can produce 1.5 times the thrust compared to liquid rocket engines. The development of indigenous cryogenic engines comes after all the Russia-supplied engines were used. These engines are essential to put satellites in geostationary orbit, but the technology - to burn a super-cooled fuel at extremely high temperatures - was sophisticated. Isro had to develop a material that could withstand high temperature and pressure during combustion.
  • INSAT 3DR is equipped with instruments that would study weather patterns and help in the surface-level search and rescue operations. It has an operational life of eight years.
  • The satellite INSAT 3DR weighing 2,211 kilogram during lift off will be put into a geo-transfer orbit by the rocket initially.
  • The indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage is being carried on-board the launch vehicle for the fourth time.
  • Its previous journeys were test flights including the GSLV-D5 and D6 missions in January 2014 and August 2015 that were resounding successes.
  • The launch of the GSLV-F05 will be the tenth flight of India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, designed to inject 2 to 2.5 ton class of satellites in geostationary orbits.
  • A significant aspect of the mission on Thursday is that, it is set to be the first operational flight of the GSLV carrying indigenous cryogenic engine.
  • With today's launch, the nation's own Cryogenic Upper Stage in the rocket is set to graduate from test phase to operational phase.

What’s special about Isro’s GSLV-F05

For the first time Isro's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) will use the indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage engine on an operational flight. Which means, it will be used to deliver the payload and not to test components, routes or parameters. Here are the details.
