Oceans Sucking All The Earth's Heat

2016 is set to be the third consecutive hottest year on record. With more greenhouse gas emissions, where does all that heat trapped by the Earth go? The oceans, mostly. While sea levels have seen a one-third rise, warmer waters are having widespread effects

Oceans Warmer Than Ever

  • Ocean temperatures rising for the past 3 decades; sea surface temperature will go up over the next decade as greenhouse gases build up
  • Strong heat accumulation in mid-latitude regions of Pacific and Indian Oceans
  • El Niño & La Niña can have year-to-year effects on temperatures
  • Storms also affect ocean temperatures. Overall temperature trends by decade reveal man-created warming

2015 recorded above-average ocean surface temperatures caused by El Niño clubbed with human-induced warming

Sea Levels Up By A Third In Past Decade

  • Since 1955, over 90% of excess heat that Earth retained has been absorbed by the oceans
  • For decades, more energy absorbed than emitted at the top of Earth’s atmosphere
  • Rate of energy gained between 1971 and 2010 was equal to the power needed to run 140 billion 1,500-watt hair dryers over the same number of years
  • The rate has only gone up in the last 10 years
  • As oceans store more heat, they expand, causing sea levels to rise by one-third in the past decade

Changing Habitat

Warmer conditions have allowed some jellyfish, like the comb jellyfish, to have longer seasons. While others have expanded territory, in some cases US fisheries have shifted north to cooler waters

What Hotter Oceans Bring

The oceans are Earth’s huge heat sponge, sheltering continents and its people from atmospheric extremes. While the near-surface ocean takes decades to get warm, deep ocean takes centuries to millennia, raising sea levels and possibly pushing the destructive potential of cyclones and hurricanes

Ice Melt & Sea Level Rise

The Greenland ice sheet has many meltwater streams, rivers and lakes. The alarming rate of ice melt and thermal expansion is causing a major rise in sea levels

Marine Species Threatened

Warmer temperatures threaten marine animal and plant species, like bleached coral on the Great Barrier Reef. Birds like Norway’s black-legged kittiwakes may soon die in warmer waters
