Should Defaulters' List Be Displayed On Public Billboards

China uses public billboards to expose runaway debtors. Should India follow suit to curb the increasing numbers on its defaulters’ list?

India should follow what China has done because people in our country take the system of taxation and loans lightly. They send large sums of black money out to foreign bank accounts. If a process like this is used, people will be forced to return the money

India too has a large number of defaulters who have tried to outsmart the law. Defaulters can be shamed if their names are highlighted in prominent dailies along with their pictures on billboards. Only then will they pay back the money they owe, which could be used for the welfare of the people.

A move such as this one would hamper the growth of small businesses which sometimes have no choice but to delay payments. It would lead to a dependency on foreign firms and hamper the ‘Make in India’ initiative. A country like China can implement such policies.
Krteyu Pillai, class VIII, Goldcrest High, Mumbai

The work of a court is to provide justice the right way. Putting up pictures of loan defaulters on billboards is not the right move as it would embarrass the defaulter in front of the entire city. Chinese courts are taking matters a bit too far. We must exercise restraint.

Even if India does implement the procedure, we must ensure no one takes it in a wrong way. Private notices must be sent first. If there is no acceptable response, then a public display can be considered. Otherwise, people might get offended.
