You Tell Us Why Punjabi Music Rocks!

The latest Punjabi rap song to have set the charts on fire, Kala Chashma from the film Baar Baar Dekho, makes us wonder what is in Punjabi rap and pop that attracts music connoisseur? Is it because the videos are high on energy or the music makes your foot tap instantly? Our students are divided in opinion. While some feel Punjabi numbers are refreshing and set the tone from the very start; there are others who feel it is nothing but cacophony. Before we get to the comments; here is a ready reckoner about why Punjabi numbers are such a rage globally.

  • Punjabi rap is gaining grounds in Bollywood because the language sounds similar and is easy to comprehend by most people in North India.
  • They have one of the biggest music industries churning out new singers on a daily basis
  • 90% of our remix artists are from Punjab, making it a preferred vocation in the State
  • Every Punjabi song used (original) in a Hindi film costs Rs 1 crore and upwards
  • In the United Kingdom, Punjabi artists - Daler Mehndi, Mika Singh and Honey Singh are as popular as superstars Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan.
  • The last Honey Singh concert in Los Angeles fetched him Rs 3.8 crore. There were 15,000 people who had gathered to hear him perform
The BIG DEBATE

Students tells us what they think about Punjabi Rap and Pop songs!

What Badshaah has to say

Why do you think Punjabi numbers are such a hit? Because it is a happy mix of soulful music and foot tapping numbers. One should have the rhyming, music sense and the ability to entice the audience.

Tell us more about rapping... Rapping is more difficult than singing. It requires precise delivery, wit and correct expression

What's the story behind your name? My mentor, Honey Singh and my mother gave me this name in 2007. They felt that my real name, Aditya, wasn't too fancy. Shah Rukh Khan is called the Badshah of Bollywood and because I am his diehard fan, they felt my name should be Badshah. Now, I am used to it.

You have churned out hit after hits, does pressure get to you sometimes? I feel more responsible now. Each time I step out to perform, I feel I shouldn't let down my fans. This nervous energy makes me give my 200%.

You are a 'Dilli ka munda'.Tell us more... I was born in Delhi and studied there. It was only after graduation that I moved to Chandigarh to pursue civil engineering. I took up a job but my heart wasn't in it. My uncle asked me to pursue my dream instead. I took up music as a career and here I am.

What was the role of your parents in making you a star today? Like typical middle class parents who are scared when their child opts for anything other than medical or engineering, even my parents were apprehensive. But as time flew by, they started enjoying my songs and they keep encouraging me to come up with original albums.

Your music is a hit with the youth. Is it easy to please them every single time? Not at all. Today's generation have access to the best music from every field and are spoilt for choice. They won't spare a bad number at all.

Why did it take rap so long to get its due in India? People weren't making good rap. You have to be unique and be able to make an impact.

They are very courteous to your parents. They never say ''han'', they say HanJi, they usually add Ji after every salutation like Mamaji, ChachiJi, UncleJi, AuntyJi and MummyJi. A punjabi friend will always be in the good books of your parents. Asin, Tusi te Lassi. Punjabi''s are good drinkers. Whether you want their company in whisky or lassi, they are always up for it.the stapple part of their food, diet or what not. Aloo Pranthe are all time favourites
