Why Teaching Is Tougher Than Rocket Science

And it proves that teaching is rocket science

How do we have more fun?

As teachers, our constant test is to sustain the energy level of our class. How do we have more fun? I do it by having fun myself, because if I am having a good time while teaching, students will have fun too. Besides this, I practice collaborative learning in my classes and participate in activities with my students, stepping down to their level. This keeps them engaged in the task because even their teacher is willing to be a part of it. I use games like Bingo, Verb Vines, Tambola, Hangman with young learners to integrate them with grammar lessons.

Teach history as an interesting string of events

Students hate history. Even though facts are strung like beads on a necklace, everything seems disconnected! To overcome this, I use videos and newspaper cartoons to connect historical events with present-day scenarios. When I did this, students automatically started interlinking the geo-political or economic changes to events in history.

Online games help

While teaching the chapter of cells to class VII, I worried whether kids would remember words such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, vacuoles etc. So, I devised a method which has worked well. After I introduce the topic and explain the differences between the plant and animal cell, I ask the children to go home and play the 'cell game' on the internet by Sheppard software.com. This game has the information about the organelles and you can score with a 'drag and drop' of the organelles.

Specific modules

To retain students' interest, I engage them in activities which enables them to have fun while  they learn. For instance, we play Bingo in the class. The winners keep getting rewarded as and when they meet the parameters. By this activity, students develop their listening skills and are exposed to various new vocabulary.

Use mind mapping and movies

I use mind mapping and film strips to promote learning. Discussing the movie ‘Valkyrie’ and relating it with the rise of Nazism and Hitler generated interest and left an indelible mark on the minds of students about the dogmas of Nazi ideologies.

To learn, you must see
While teaching the chapter ‘value of flowers to class IV students, I brought a plant in full bloom to school and explained the process of flowering. We even explained how extraction of perfume is done. It’s easier to learn what your eyes see.
