Why Our Stars Don't Speak Up Like Streep?

Golden Globe’s award ceremony — held recently — started as any other award ceremonies. What made it different this time was the speech by Meryl Streep. She has been awarded for a lifetime of notable work. In her speech, while receiving Cecil B. DeMille Award, Streep took the opportunity to take a dig at the US President elect Donald Trump, who had earlier mocked a disabled reporter during his campaign period. The victim is New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski, suffering from a condition that affects his joint movements.

In her powerful speech, Streep said, "It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back."

Hours after her speech, she was trending throughout social media and netizens applauding her bravery. Some even went further to question why can’t Bollywood award nights be this gutsy!

Hindi film industry is synonymous to national entertainment. And same rule applies for its award ceremonies. But again, compared to the internationally acclaimed award ceremonies, Hindi film award shows are way different. In an interview last month, actor Govinda said, “One camp announces the award, another from the same camp receives it while a third one from their camp sits in the audiences and claps vigorously.” If we have been fumbling to clarify, this man has driven the nail home.

Bollywood stars are lame-duck target
Karan Johar who has hit the headlines recently, thanks to his tell-all book would never open up about socio-political scenario of the country. Is it too much to expect from an ace director, blessed with eloquence? We have got the proof when Pakistan actor Fawad Khan starrer ‘Ae Dil Hai Muskil’ was released.

Last month, Shah Rukh Khan silently settled issues with MNS who is not even in power in Maharashtra – all because his upcoming movie “Raees” stars Pakistan actress Mahira Khan in it. And nobody knows it better than Khans in India, how difficult it is to appease the people of India. One instance of being misquoted and you are lost for eternity from the hearts of the people. Remember Aamir Khan, who one quote was misinterpreted out of proportion.

We need to change
Before we ask our actors to speak revolutionarily, more education is needed for the countrymen and the people who run the nation. We need to be more receptive to views that we don’t agree to and stop interfere in other people’s matter. And after we have successfully achieved the level of ‘tolerant’ Indians, we can ask the taxpaying actors to be our perfect role models.

Do you believe that Bollywood stars are too scared, and rightly so, to openly vent their views? Let’s know your views in the comments section below.

Yes, I feel that it is like a common habit in all Indians that not only Bollywood stars, all of us hesitate to speak up or vent our views easily. And the biggest reason of which is a commom hindi dialogue" Log kya kahenge" or " Log kya sochenge". This is the thing and a habit we should overcome. And we should stop being hesitant.

Everyone has the freedom of speech & to express their views. There is no need to hesitate or feel scared about expressing our views. We need to be open minded first of all. Secondly, we should give priority to our views and express them fluently instead of pondering over, what others will think of us. Well, In the case of actors, I think that they are good enough in their place. I cannot judge them because it will not be easy for me to step in their shoe do what they are doing .

Bollywood stars are not scared. We have seen actors like Kalki Koechlin open up about issues that Indian society thinks of as Taboos, so when that is possible, everything else is too. Actors aren''t scared, they are just being swayed, in the wrongest way possible, by the society, particularly the media, that blows things out of proportion.

I agree that Bollywood stars are too scared to speak out but some people have spoken out.People like Amitabh Bachchan spoke about the current situation of women,Kalki spoke about the country''s taboo''s etc..There are numerous situation where they spoke out but some are taken in a wrong way.Even a slightest bit of a speech may be mistaken and all their stardom maybe gone in just 1 minute. Our country is really full of people who are front first to make the people who speak correct as wrong.

Yes, the bollywood stars ain''t too audacious to openly express their opinions about such high-ranked political figures. Whenever an issue involving a bollywood star and a politician or a diplomat takes place, for the first two-days it ca be seen on TVs, Youtube etc. and after that bollywood stars are seen apologizing not raising their voice against a wrong deed. This is not acceptable.

I think our country is going backwards when people used to be against people who speak about sati. These days people are against persons who speak openly about the current issues. Not only actors even politicians and even a comman man has the right to vent down their views.

Yes, I think that Bollywood stars are too scared to openly vent their views because they know that if they say even a single inappropriate word, the millions who love them would turn into their enemies. But, still many actors and actresses do speak when they feel they should.

I personally feel that some of our actors and actresses at times go wrong with their statements. Taking the example Salman Khan saying that he felt like a raped woman after Sultan was just insane. After all they are what makes the media more interesting and demanding. They can''t just say anything out in the open. A normal code of conduct is there for them as well and opening to specific topics like Streep would be appreciated:)
