Why Justice League Failed At Box Office

It was supposed to be a sure-fire smash. And why not? It brought together for the first time the DC universe finest superheroes in what promised to be an ultimate showdown. Unfortunately, the superhero ensemble turned out to be a critical and commercial disappointment…

Justice League will wind up its theatrical run with poor box office collection. Reports say, the Avengers-style team-up,  featuring superheroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman and The Flash, would barely touch the $670 million mark. Well, the figure is impressive but given the huge production cost ($300 million by some estimates) the returns are disappointing. According to reports, the superhero saga has barely managed to break even. Even when compared to other flicks in the DC Universe, the returns are paltry. ‘Justice League’ will just scrape past the global gross of ‘Man of Steel ($668 million) but fall short of ‘Suicide Squad’ ($745 million), ‘Batman v Superman’ (873 million) and ‘Wonder Woman’s’ record-breaking $821 million! ‘Justice League’ is not just a commercial misfire, it also didn’t go down well with critics and audiences. Let’s understand why...

No solo flicks before the big team-up

By the time Marvel brought together all the Avengers in 2012, fans had seen their favourite superheroes in standalone features. Remember, ‘The Avengers’ was the culmination of five superhero films. It had build up the anticipation for the big team-up and gave fans ample time to get emotionally vested in the heroes. Whereas, barring ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Wonder Woman’, DC didn’t come up with enough solo flicks to establish central characters before the superhero smash. This resulted in Cyborg, Aquaman and Flash remaining unknown to non-comic book fans. A Marvel-like gradual introduction of superheroes would have paid DC rich dividends.

Thor: Ragnarok took the sheen off
A second rate superhero from Marvel (no offense to fans of Thor) beat the DC’s finest. Who could have thought about it given the previous iteration of Thor left a bitter taste in the mouth. But Kiwi director Taika Waititi gave Thor a much-needed revamp by bringing his quirky touch to ‘Thor: Rangnarok.’ It’s witty, charming, silly, and over the top in the best possible way. As a result, the spectacle was lapped by fans and critics alike while many hailed it as one of the best superhero films of all time. It is reflected in the collections of the film — $848 million. So, when ‘Justice League’ hit the theater, ‘Thor: Rangnarok’ was still playing on over 3,000 screens worldwide; which put a huge dent in the collections of ‘Justice League.’

It wasn’t good enough

Well, isn’t this the most obvious reason? A general consensus for the movie read “While it doesn’t touch the heights of ‘Wonder Woman’ ‘Justice League’ is better than its prequel ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.’” That’s hardly a compliment. Drenched in tacky special effects, and combined with a lame villain and a bland plot, ‘Justice League’ was a huge letdown. A one possible reason for this mess is the post-production woes of the film. Partway through shooting, Zack Snyder, who helmed ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’, stepped away from the film due to a personal tragedy, and Joss Whedon was brought on to finish the project. As the saying goes... too many cooks spoil the broth. The resulting reshoots and tinkering with the plot to give it a lighter tone took the sting out of the flick and made the narrative inconsistent.

Batman V Superman memory still fresh

Being a sequel to a widely-panned project puts a movie on a sticky wicket. The fans were still reeling from the disappointment of ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’. That movie just like ‘Justice League’ garnered a lot of hype but ended up being a damp squib. Despite doing a decent business, the 2016 release drew a near universal flak from critics. It has a score of 27% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Though ‘Wonder Woman’ came as a welcome relief to DC fans, the fact that ‘Justice League’ is a sequel to ‘Batman V Superman’ turned off many prospective theatre goers.
