Why Climate Change Needs An Image Makeover

The picture of a polar bear stranded on a chunk of broken ice accompanies most of the stories you read on climate change. The depiction of this magnificent creature may grab eyeballs but it doesn’t convey the real dread of global warming...

Do a Google Search on climate change and click on ‘Images’ – two of the most recurring images you will encounter are of smoke churning out of smokestacks and polar bears perched on a floating piece of ice. Barring a few, there aren’t many images featuring people.

What does this convey to us subconsciously? That climate change is a problem that effects only polar bears living in far-off places and humans are completely oblivious to its consequences.  But nothing could be further from the truth.

Climate change is affecting billions around the world. Let’s take a close look at what’s happening at home. India is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change impacts. Extreme weather events are costing India $9-10 billion annually, said a report by the agriculture ministry in 2017. It also said that cereals, fruits and vegetables will see reduced yields over the years putting the livelihood of farmers at risk.

From the most powerful countries in the world to the least developed, people around the world are experiencing the negative effects of climate change, which include changing weather patterns, rising sea level, and extreme weather events.

Picture perfect

That’s why it becomes necessary to use people-focused images in media, campaigns and public discourse to bring the seemingly distant risks of climate change closer to home and enhance people’s commitment to take action. The purpose of a brilliantly crafted article or a masterfully engineered campaign on climate change will get defeated if the images, videos, cartoons and graphics accompanying them don’t reflect the human predicament. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words.  The need of the hour is to find broader and more diverse visual images for climate change. This is the least we can do for our planet.

Do you agree that we need more diverse visual images to depict climate change? Let’s know your views in the comments section below.

As a picture would attract viewers for viewing it, it could also provide them a great amount of information. The posting of images on Google or other sites could help people in the improvement of their views and make it an important matter for them. The almighty words that say-''Try ,Try but don''t cry'' will one day come true and make this planet a better place to live within! after all we are the only ones who could now prevent the destruction of our lovely planet EARTH!

There is a saying which states that the picture has more power than words . Whatever today young people , kids , old people are attracted by pictures . Its all I the hands of photographer . There had been plenty enough news on global warming but still some people are still not able to understand it clearly . So more than words picture will surely make the people understand the pathetic situation of our dear mother Earth .

a picture conveys what 1000 words cannot, a visual makeover to pollution is, i think quite important. i dont think its creates a deep impact to see "dear-old-suffering-polar bear" ''cause usually what affects the minds of us humans is what is affecting us. We mostly dont give a penny worth of importance to suffering of ecology. Showing also, just 2 phases of a vast topic as pollution is, dear google, not justified.Really.

Definitely we need more diverse visual images to depict climate change as a picture speaks a 1000 words and we need to act on this problem of global warming together. For this we all need to support each other.
