Christmas time is family time! Which book, film, tv serial shows your bond the best?
If it wasn’t for Tim ‘The Toolman’ Taylor from the 90s TV show Home Improvement, I wouldn’t have known that it is normal for an engineer-dad to want to repair every machine, fan, fridge, robot toy, remote in the house that he could get his hands on.
The show helped me to understand the way my dad’s brain worked, but more importantly showed me through the parent-child bond Tim shares with his sons Zack, Taylor and Cody all the fun we could invent together. On the other hand, the show ‘Gilmore Girls’ helped to forge a better bond with my mother as I learnt that there are some things only moms know best. However, that was then. Over the years tv serials, books and pop culture has shown us that no matter how weird you may think your bonds are you’re your parents, it has a serial version. Serials like Hum Paanch, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Hannah Montana and films like Pa, Mary Kom, Taare Zameen Pe, Baghban made me wish I had a bonding with my parents that was as perfect as the characters.
So we asked our youth reporters if they’ve seen films or serials that showcased a beautiful parent-child relationship that was either them already or something they aspired to work on. Here are their answers. You can tell us your favourite in the comments section.
I found it in 'The Drover's wife'by Henry Lawson
In the Henry Lawson's story "The Drover's wife", an excellent example of ideal parent-child relationship is shown by the mother (unnamed in the story) and her children especially the elder one Tommy. The story has several instances where the drover's wife (the mother) struggles to save her children when their father is away most of the times. It is noticed that her children are very cooperative. The story ends on an emotional note where her eldest son thought only of eleven hugs of his mother saying that he would never leave his mother in trouble in a barren land and go away as his father did. It is really very touching showing how children could feel so much for their parents.

I found it in Baghban
The Parent-Child relationship, as portrayed on screen, is best represented in the movie Baghban, where the character played by Salman Khan enthralls me. Although he is the adopted son of the couple, he stil worships them and considers them to be God. On the contrary the couple's own children do not respect them, worshiping them is a far cry.

'Mom' Is Best
My favorite parent child relationship is that of Bonnie and Christy from the tv show 'Mom'. The dynamics of their relationship are very different. They are not the quintessential mother daughter pair. They constantly take witty digs at each other, but at the same time care for and love each other. They've been through the same things and so they don’t judge each other. Their relationship is trusting, open and confiding.

I found it with The Van der Woodsen's in 'Gossip Girl'
An ideal parent-child relationship according to me would be like between Serena and her mother, Lily van der Woodsen from 'Gossip Girl' as they share an excellent rapport and bond over a lot of stuff. They also care for each other as well as are very open-minded.
