When Do We Feel Most Patriotic? Discuss

My eyes well up with tears whenever I watch the climax of a patriotic film. We can all breathe free due to the great sacrifice of our past generations. A humbling experience.” Hrithik Roshan’s patriotic moment for us echoes true for many of us. There are others who feel patriotic during a a special event. Nawazuddin Siddiqui, for instance, feels “Indian” when he visits the Wagah border.

“The Indian Army goes through the routine with such sincerity, it gives me goosebumps,” he says. Ever thought history books could make anyone cry? Ask Deepika Padukone who confesses that she feels a sense of pride whenever she reads chapters on Indian Independence. “I am filled with gratitude towards our soldiers. A big salute to them,” she says. Choreographer Farah Khan feels patriotic when she performs in a foreign country. “Performing overseas when people are rooting for you makes me a proud Indian.” We asked students what makes them feel nationalistic...

Our greatest patriotic moments

  • I feel the most patriotic on Independence Day. For the most part, it has to do with the way our school observes this day. We look back in time to where we were and how far we’ve come. Over the years, this has grown on me and I consider myself truly privileged to be part of this great nation of ours. Both August 15 and January 26 evoke this feeling.

  • When I see a successful Indian being acknowledged in any part of the world, it is a patriotic moment for me. It is inspiring to see them on an international platform, proving how far Indians have gone and will continue to do so.

  • Watching an India vs Pakistan cricket match, or anything that involves an Indian sports team arouses patriotism in me. When I  read a book about freedom fighters, I get goosebumps. When I listen to patriotic numbers like ‘Ae mere watan ke’ I get emotional.

Neha Vashist, class X, National Hill View Public School, Bengaluru

  • When the Indian cricket team wins a match especially against Pakistan and that too in a final, it’s a high-five moment for me. Am sure every Indian is filled with pride when our team walks away with laurels. The fireworks, dances on streets and the hooting... these are all heady moments of patriotism.

Manasvi Rawal, class X,  Ryan International School, Kharghar, Mumbai

  • Whenever I hear the National Anthem, I feel a sense of pride. A big salute to freedom fighters like Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Chandra Shekhar Azaad as well as all other unknown heroes who brought freedom to us. I am reminded of the trials and tribulations faced by our leaders. The song ‘Vande Mataram’ is another beautiful composition that instills a feeling of patriotism in me.

Agrim Khurana, class XI, Delhi Public School, Lucknow

  • I feel most patriotic during a cricket match because that’s the only time,  when the nation forgets caste, creed, religion and gender distinction. The nation’s eyes remains glued to the TV screen and 1.2 billion lips together chant “Go India” and “Bleed Blue.” No festival is celebrated here the way Indian Cricket team’s victory is celebrated.

Aqsha Naimuddin, class XI, Shri Shikshyatan School, Kolkata
