What Do US Presidents Do After Retirement

While the world is keen to know what Barack Obama will do after leaving the White House, here is what US presidents have done post-retirement. Some wrote books, some turned activists and others gave speeches.

GEORGE WASHINGTON: He was the first president of the US who lived for 2 years and 9 months after retiring officially in 1797. During this period, he managed his 8,000-acre farm rather successfully.

JOHN ADAMS: The second president and a renowned political theorist, Adams retired in  1809 and spent his days farming. He also began work on an autobiography, which was never finished.

THOMAS JEFFERSON: The third president of the country continued pursuing his educational interests after retirement. He sold his  books to the Library of Congress and founded the University of Virginia.

JAMES MADISON: The fourth president of the country returned to farming in 1817. He left the presidency a poorer man whose fortunes dipped because of the plummeting prices of tobacco at his farm.

GEORGE W BUSH: Bush hit the lecture circuit, making between $100,000 and $150,000 for every speech. He delivered more than 200 speeches since leaving office in 2009 and made  more than $30 million.

JIMMY CARTER: The 39th president  founded the Carter Center, a rights organisation, became involved in Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for the poor, and ended up with a Nobel Peace Prize.

RONALD REAGAN & GEORGE H W BUSH: Both former presidents gave paid speeches and made some serious good money. In fact, Reagan, the 40th president, got $2 million for his two speeches in Japan.

BILL CLINTON: He made $225,000 from a speaking assignment in 2014, and a lecture series in Europe fetched him $1.4 million. From Jan 2001 to 2013, Bill Clinton earned   $104.9m from his speeches. - ET
