TOIStudents Say Banning Junk Food Won't Work

Pizzas, burgers and aerated drinks may soon be out of the palate of school canteens. In order to restrict consumption of junk food by children, the food safety regulator is preparing a negative list of products that are high on salt, sugar and fat to prevent their availability in schools and their vicinity. The list is expected to include an array of food and beverages like chips, pizzas, burgers, ready-to eat noodles, sugar-sweetened carbonated and non carbonated drinks, potato fries etc. The move comes in the wake of rising burden of diabetes and obesity, among youngsters.

Here's How Schools Are Keeping Fast Food At Bay

1. Junk food is banned in our school. We have a well-planned menu for the month which ensures calories are balanced. Food and nutrition workshops are organised to enable kids to make their own choices. We are planning to introduce coloured packaging for different kinds of food in the canteen. This will help children identify and pick the right food.

Mukul Jha, principal, GD Salwan Public School, Rajinder Nagar

2.We have not yet started categorising food in our canteen but we are strict about the food being served. Students are served vegetarian food; we also ensure that only a limited amount of burgers and patties or fried stuff is sold. We are trying to sensitise kids about their food habits at home as well. We plan to introduce workshops and seminars that will be addressed by doctors and nutritionists. Also, we will involve students in making charts and posters about healthy lifestyle and put them up for all to see.

Sanjukta Majumdar, teacher, Birla High School, Kolkata

3. In our school, we completely did away with the concept of a canteen in order to inculcate healthy eating habits. Children are encouraged to bring only home food; packaged food is completely banned. We also conduct awareness camps and drives for parents. In fact, parents have the liberty to send in a child’s tiffin box before lunch time with home-cooked meal, even if it is only a sandwich. While we cannot control what happens at a child’s home, at least we can take a stand within the school.

Maya Sukumaran, principal, Gitanjali Senior School, Hyderabad

4. We never allow junk food to be served in our school canteen. We maintain and follow a nutrition chart, which ensures that all children get freshly cooked, nutritious food to eat. All our children love the food served in our school canteen. Parents too are at ease because they know that their children will get healthy, wholesome food. We make an effort to see that taste is not compromised because of the high nutrition standards. So, children do not find the food bland or tasteless. The colour coding will allow us to follow the guidelines in the canteen; it will be a handy guide for children as well.

Vrinda Malse, principal, Sanjivani International School, Kharghar

5. We have given a set menu to all students at the beginning of year. They are allowed to bring food only according to the weekly menu – chapatis, vegetables, poha, etc. Even for birthday celebrations in school, kids are allowed to bring only fruits, not cakes or chocolates. No bakery items are allowed. We also hold puppet shows to spread the message healthy eating.

Sheetal Varma, principal, Rasiklal M Dhariwal International School, Pune

6. Strict orders have been issued by our school to provide a balanced diet. We always ensure that healthy food is available on our premises.

Why It Is Important To Keep Junk Food Out Of Schools? Experts Take

According to health experts, the sale of sugar-sweetened beverages and HFSS food items must be restricted to check obesity and weight issues among kids. Hear our experts...

1. Obesity has increased among schoolchildren in the past decade despite the debate on ways to curb it. Urgent action is required to check this urban epidemic. We need laws to stop the sale of unhealthy food in schools; directives only may not help. Also, advertisements for such food items that target children should be discouraged

Dr Anoop Misra, chairman of Fortis C-Doc Centre of Excellence for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases

2. Indian snacks — whether packaged or sold by roadside hawkers — contain excessive fat that enhances taste and increases the shelf life of the food. Trans-fats lead to a range of chronic illnesses. The CAC has not put emphasis on them in the draft guidelines

Dr Sujeet Jha, chairperson of the endocrinology division at Max Hospital, Saket

Will Banning Junk Food In Schools Push Healthy Eating? Students React

A student obeys his teacher more than his parents. If these food items are replaced with healthier options, students will have no choice but to eat healthy meals.
Lamis Khokar, class IX, HMN English High School, Mumbai

Taste, price and convenience are the USP of junk food. Imposing bans in schools won’t work as there are multiple options outside. Schools should provide healthier options in their canteens.
Sanjana Varanasi, class XI, DPS, Ahmedabad

Junk food is available almost everywhere and banning it from schools will not help. Parents should ensure that they serve us healthy food which tastes better than fast food.
Srijita Chakraborty, class IX, BDM International, Kolkata

Yes, banning of junk food in schools would definitely work. Hunger will force them to eat healthy food at school and they will develop a taste for different items. I’m glad that my school has already taken this step.

Dhanvi Shah, class VIII, Gopi Birla Memorial School, Mumbai

Banning anything only raises the curiosity of the student and there is no dearth of junk food outside the boundaries of schools and homes. At best, younger students who don't have access to pocket money maybe affected. Instead we need a shift in the mind set and that starts at home with the parents. For example, my parents raised me with the rule that I can eat Maggi once in every 15 days. But I see many students eat Maggi every day! Obviously that's the parent's fault. Once a child has been raised with certain good habits, they will be able to eat junk food as it was always meant to be, IN MODERATION!

Shreya Gakhar, class X, Mata Jai Kaur Public School, Ashok Vihar, New Delhi

Banning junk food from schools would be a very big step to implement what the school itself is stressing on. On one hand teaching biology and metabolism and on the other hand having junk menu in the canteen is indeed an interesting contrast. And banning junk food will work well with the schools because running the canteen is not its core job but teaching and imparting knowledge is. So banning junk food from schools is going to be a very positive step.

Anshika Arora, classXI, Shri Shikshayatan School, Kolkata

Banning junk food completely is something nobody will like. I think that instead if completely banning junk, schools must permit junk food on alternate days. If the talk is about junk food sold in canteens, I think the best way to control consumption of junk food is to either reduce the amount of junk in stock per day, or allot certain days for different classes so that every class can enjoy junk on specific days. But banning junk on the whole will be injustice to us students.

Kritika Malhotra Indira National School

this is the right time to start this initiative. slowly the obesity rate among children is increasing and if this food is banned from school, we may see a reduction in the obesity rate which would bring out more productivity and agility and activity among the younger generation.

I truly support this view, as they say ''Health is Wealth'' and if we save the wealth now, we get a huge amount in tge future. The future of this country is the present generation. If we are healthy, the nation is healthy because a healthy state of mind makes a person take better decisions. Banning junk foods inside the school premises would be a great step to bring about a change in the health of the nation because healthy us happy.

Chetan Yadav LT.ATUL K.MEM GURGAON

NO , junk shouldn''t be banned in schools . It''s quantity may be decreased but it should be available in a maintained ratio. Children require it as it is the taste of their mouth.

Dhanush Venkata Shishya BEML Public school

I totally disagree that junk food should be banned instead healthy foods should be added or junk foods can be given only some days of the week so that the will not be able to enjoy their favourite as well be safe.

B.PRISCILLA ZION MATRICULATION HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL SEMBAKK

junk food is not good for health it should be removed in schools but not at a time we should do like the stock is not available in this (lays tomato flavour) like that and then stop it completely in school campus

Banning junk food is a step in progress of the youth. '' health is wealth'' they say. Appropriate diet, physical activity and 8 hours of sleep will reduce the number of brain-damaged students in classes. It will also increase the risk of obesity in many students. Its better to provide nutritious food to the students by the school.

Archisha Ghosh VIDYA VALLEY

As a foodie, it will be a very upset making topic to me. I do not think so it will be a very good option about completely banning any junk food at school as it might upset most of the students at school. A better option is just to select a particular date on which they will give junk food on every month. In this way the students won''t be upset by the decision taken by the school. The first option can create a controversy at school.

Do the authorities seriously believe that merely levying a ban on junk food in schools would solve the problem? Sorry, but miracles won''t size that way! This is almost like saying that since the heat of the sun is aversive on me I''ll shut my eyes.Ignorance is bliss, you see. Students will look for loopholes in the plan, say they would get junk food from home. I believe what authorities need to do is to deceive kids! Canteens need to fabricate nutritious food in ways that lure kids towards it.

Junk food is a very tasty to eat but does it serve the nutritional requirements that our body needs? Are we sure weather what we''re eating is fresh and healthy? Junk food is nothing but a spoiler of our health, it is good to have it once in a week but daily consumption may lead to health issues. But still, banning Junk food from schools is a bad idea as maybe not everyone can get healthy food prepared in the morning to take it to school. And more or less, but it also saves time.

Oshin The Orbis School

Rather than completely barring the eating of junk food the school authorities or parents must ensure timely eating of junk foods, as they too constitute an essential part of our diet. We cannot only live on healthy Food. Sometimes we may need to hog up junk. So schools can assign monitors in each class to monitor how often a child brings junk. It is already happening in our school and we bring junk on one day of the week only.

Waayavya Mahadik St John''s high school q

Banning junkfood in schools will definitely be hated by one and all because most of the children are completely reliable on it for their lunch.Since obesity has increased now a days it is must to stop it and provide healthy and hygienic food to all. Due to this important step, many inactive kids would be active and start taking further steps in any field. Ban is an injustice type of thing .It can be controlled by keeping specific amount if junk food or dividing it to all once or twice a week.

Om Badiyani Sandipani

Kids will not ,Ike banning of junk food in school. Instead, we can @make nutritious food compulsory on two days per week. This will help make a balanced diet with the children loving it.

NAVYA MALHOTRA SWARAJ INDIA PUBLIC SCHOOL

This would be a very good initiative .Surely ,there are many sources of junk food outside ,but at least that would decrease the frequency with which students can have junk food .If they do not get direct access in school ,the chances of having it outside are there but they are less .

SHUBH RANA DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL

As time flies, people have to adjust with the situations and follow what is called ''regulations''. Same like that after banning the junk food some queries may emerge for first but then everyone has to accept the phenomena. So I conclude that banning junk food in school will improve our health conditions besides it will also help in including a healthy diet in the schools'' menu.

Hargun Kochhar GYAN BHARTI SCHOOL(SAKET)

I think banning junk food in schools is definitely going to work as at home kids will never listen to their parents but at school they would have no option but to reduce their junk food consumption.Yes , kids will find loopholes for sure but at least this will help at some level to control their diet.

Ananya Sharma Salwan Public School

Today eating junk food causes many health problems but banning them is not a better outlet schools should derive a new concept of minimizing the variety of junk food and increasing the variety of healthy food that tastes better than junk food in school canteens. Junk food should be consumed on specific days of week not everyday.

Tanish arora CAMBRIDGE FOUNDATION SCHOOL

Junk food should be banned in the school canteens. Instead of junk food they should serve fruits and vegetables, fruit juices, vegetable cury etc.

Dev Manwani FR AGNEL MULTIPURPOSE SCHOOL-AMBERN

junk food should not be totally avoided as the children love those kind of meals now a days, but the consumption of junk food should be reduced to a lower lever for e.g. junk food should be eaten once or twice in 3 or 4 weeks. this can be the solution of the problem

Shruti Singh RYAN INTERNATIONAL

this is not the effective idea that will lead to the miracles in our country for overcoming children becoming COUCH- POTATOES!!!!!!!!!!!!! the students may bring the junk food from other foodstores to the school. Or some may eat the junk food at home coz we spend a max. of 6 hours at the school.thus in both the cases it is leading to obesity in children. so why only to target only school canteens???better provisions should be made outside school to ban junk food.

HARSHITA NILESH GHAG DON BOSCO SCHOOL (NERUL)

If we ban junk food it is not good. If we strictly make a habit of eating healthy food minimum for a month. We should eat junk food only one day or two days in a month. This will reduce harm to our health. Eating junk food daily can cause overweight, illness and many more things. So, it''s better not to ban junk food but reduce the habit of eating them.

Pranshu Choudhary INDIARAPURAM PUB SCH INDIRAPURAM GZ

Banning junk food won''t help in controlling obesity . As the major cause is overeating and not eating on regular intervals having a desire to eat every now and then results in obesity. It is firmly believed that junk food doesn''t contain nutrients.let''s take a burger for example : it has cheese (good for bones and teeths) bread ( everyone eats it on a normal bases ) and the filling or tikki contains either chicken or vegetables which are good for health and which are also eaten at houses .

Brenda Marshal PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Banning the junk foods completely may not be liked by everyone. Because some of them live their lives on eating junk foods. I don''t say that we should not eat junk foods at all but it can be continued as once in a month or last to last once in a week..
