Time To Go For A Green Diwali

The festival of lights — Diwali celebrates the victory of good over evil. It signifies the end of ignorance and the beginning of light that enlightens all. So, in a bid to encourage youngsters on the need to curb pollution that is on the rise, schools have taken various initiatives to make it an eco-friendly Diwali this year.  Take a look...

  • Our school is hosting a series of activities to sensitise students on the need to celebrate ‘no-crackers’ Diwali. Students are holding peace rallies to make others aware of the pollution caused due to crackers. Pamphlets on ‘say no to crackers’ are also being distributed to spread the message.
Dolly Dhawan, teacher, GD Salwan, New Delhi
  • We have put up placards and charts on our school notice boards about enjoying a cracker-free Diwali. We have also conducted workshops for creative arts in the school to encourage children to be occupied with other creative pursuits rather than bursting crackers.
Hema Nair, principal, DAV Intl, Mumbai
  • Every year, before Diwali, we encourage students to come up with their own ideas on how to make the festival green. That encourages others to follow what their peers plan to do. In the past, they have come back and explained how they celebrated an eco-friendly Diwali without bursting crackers and by lighting diyas to spread more light.
M Srinivasan, principal, GEAR Innovative International School, Bengaluru
  • We have asked students not only to save money by not buying firecrackers, but also suggested them to spend the same in keeping loved ones happy.  Students of our school are buying toys for NGO kids and making snacks for old age homes.
Nashy Chauhan, director, Anand Niketan Group of Schools, Ahmedabad
  • For the past one week, school teachers during the morning assembly, have been apprising the students about the harmful affects of burning crackers through insightful talks. Even in the classrooms, discussions are being held as to why we should opt for a green Diwali. Round the year, the school engages in activities like plantation drives that promote environment conservation and such talks to reinforce the message, in a way that even a class I student is aware of the situation and knows what needs to be done.

I am going to celebrate this Diwali as a Green Diwali by not bursting any crackers which lead to pollution and global warming. This year I will make a rangoli at home and light lots of mud diyas instead of the chemical ones. I have also pledged not to use and chinese goods for this Diwali.

Harini.V Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

I stopped bursting crackers since last year. It not only causes pollution in the air, but also burns so many lives. Poor children are forced to produce crackers in the factories and many lose their lives and families due to fire accidents. So, all such bad happenings can be stopped, if everyone gives up the habit of bursting crackers. Happy green diwali to all!

I never play with crackers not because of I am afraid of but because I know that it creates a lot of pollution and I don''t want our future generation in danger.

Yeah!! I celebrate a cracker free and green Diwali. Our planet is facing the problem of pollution and disturbance in the weather cycle. Also many people and animals lose their lives every year because of the crackers. So for our temporary fun we must not harm other creatures. And the most important point is that instead of disposing our money to buy these crackers, we must contribute the money for the welfare of poor people. So celebrate GREEN and ECO-FREINDLY DIWALI.

Bhawna Goel HAMDARD PUBLIC SCHOOL(SANGAM VIHAR)

Bhawna goel HAMDARD PUBLIC SCHOOL The coolest thing to do this Diwali is to give away your old stuff like clothes, shoes, etc to the less privileged ones. Rather than letting your old items sit idle, have them donate. It will not only rid the environment from unwanted waste but also light the lives of certain people who cannot afford to get new things for themselves
