This Is The Coldest Village On Earth

With temperatures falling to -71.2C, Oymyakon in Russia is the coldest village on Earth. Ironically, Oymyakon means ‘non-freezing water’ due to a nearby hot spring. With the average temperature for Jan standing at -50C, the village is the coldest permanently- inhabited settlement in the world. Known as the ‘Pole of Cold’, this is the coldest-ever temperature recorded in Oymyakon...

The life

  • In ‘Pole of Cold’, the average temperature is usually -50C in January. The average length of the day varies from three hours in December to 21 hours in summer.
  • Home to roughly 500 people, this village was originally a stopover for reindeer herders who would water their flocks from the thermal spring.
  • Most of the buildings in this village have outdoor toilets and still burn coal and wood for heat. Though few houses now have inbuilt toilets and enjoy a few modern conveniences, there is still a single shop that provides the town’s bare necessities.
  • The whole town comes to a halt in five hours if the power station runs out of wood and coal. Unlike other countries, where a flurry of snow brings life to a grinding halt, Oymyakon’s solitary school only shuts if temperatures fall below -52C.

Source of livelihood:

As nothing grows in that village, people eat reindeer meat and horsemeat for survival. To earn a living, they work as reindeer breeders, hunters and ice-fisherman. According to doctors, people there don’t suffer from malnutrition as the animal milk contains a lot of micronutrients.
