This Day That Year: Sachin's Test Debut

NEW DELHI: November 15, 1989, National Stadium, Karachi. Test match number 1127. India v Pakistan 1st Test. Sachin Tendulkar debuts. Nuff said.

The start of a wonderful journey for all cricket fans who got a glimpse of a shy 16-year-old boy from Mumbai. Sachin Tendulkar embarked upon a career of a lifetime and when called time on his illustirous career that lasted 24 years - The God - had amassed 15,921 at 53.78 with a record 51 centuries and 68 half-centuries in 200 Tests.
 
In his first Test, Tendulkar walked out to bat at number six with India tottering at 41 for four, in reply to Pakistan's first innings total of 409. Tendulkar faced 24 balls during his stay in the middle earning himself two boundaries en route 15 runs. His stay was cut short when he was castled by another debutant who later went on to become a legend of the game - Waqar Younis.
 
India rallied with handful contributions from the lower order and eventually earned a draw. Apart from batting in the first innings, Tendulkar rolled his arms over for one over, that was taken for ten runs. He did not get to bat again in the Test match. Both the teams had two debutants each with Tendulkar and Younis going on have illustrious careers. Indian fast bowler Salil Ankola never played a Test for India again and went on to pursue a successful career in acting.
 
Pakistan's other debutant, Shahid Saeed, too could not find a place in the Test team after this match, but went on to play ten ODIs for Pakistan.
 
The eventual Man of the Match, Kapil Dev, was playing his 100th Test match, and he became the first fast bowler to reach the milestone and he also crossed the 350-wicket mark during the match, making him only the fourth bowler at that time to breach the 350-barrier.
