The Next Tallest Building In The World

For the most part, residents of the Big Apple are unfazed as the city changes around them, now immune to the rate at which progress arrives. However, Manhattan is about to see something so ridiculously over the top it can turn the head of even the most unimpressed New Yorker.

Architectural firm oiio Studio has just revealed its plans for what it’s calling the longest building in the world, and the concept images make it pretty clear the title is well deserved.

‘The Big Bend’, as it’s called is a slender tower that stretches 4,000 feet long… yes, long. In a bid to take advantage of Manhattan’s zoning laws, architects have long since built their towers higher and higher, in order to gain more usable space. The Big Bend is similar in that it rises to a dizzying height, before curving around and growing back down into the earth.

The glass-lined tower even needs a special elevator system, capable of travelling in curves, horizontally, and in loops. "The innovative track changing system allows for the horizontal connection of two shafts on the top and bottom to create a continuous loop," oiio said in a press release.

"If we manage to bend our structure instead of bending the zoning rules of New York we would be able to create one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan. The longest building in the world."

If all goes to plan, the Big Bend would technically be double the height of the tallest towers in the world right now, if it was stretched out that is.

The team explains that, since the skyscraper trend began, towers have just been getting higher, and more expensive over time. "We have become familiar with building height measurements. We usually learn about the latest tallest building and we are always impressed by it’s price per square foot. It seems that a property’s height operates as a license for it to be expensive.

'The Big Bend can become a modest architectural solution to the height limitations of Manhattan. We can now provide our structures with the measurements that will make them stand out without worrying about the limits of the sky."
