KANPUR: A 15-year-old boy from Firozabad, who cleared his JEE Advanced this years, could become the youngest person to enrol at an IIT. Abhay Agarwal, who will turn 16 in November this year, has been allotted a seat at IITBHU after scoring 2467 All India Rank. At 15, when students usually prepare for Class X Board exam, the teenager was at IIT-Kanpur to get his documents verified for admission.

Vice-chairman of IIT-JEE Kanpur zone Prof Shalabh said he was pleased to meet the boy when he checked in for document verification. Other staff members also expressed their surprise when they learned about his age.

"He could be the youngest candidate this year to join an IIT. His class X marksheet confirms that he is 15 and a half years old. He was born on November 9, 2001," said a JEE staffer. TOI has a copy of Abhay's class X marksheet.

Abhay, who has secured admission in mechanical engineering, has not yet confirmed his seat and instead opted to 'float' the given choice of institute as he wants to study at IIT Roorkee.
"Since I jumped initial classes, I could complete my XII before other students. I have been lucky to crack JEE Advanced as well. I want to be in IIT-Roorkee and hope I will get it," Abhay said.

His father Mukesh Agarwal, who is posted as a pump attendant at Firozabad Nagar Nigam, said, "Abhay has brought us laurels at an early age. When the chief medical officer in Firozabad had to prepare his medical certificate, he was surprised. At IIT Kanpur also, JEE staff was amazed to know he was this young. He is a talented boy with high capabilities. He would finish BTech also in the stipulated time."

The teenager said he stayed away from social media while preparing for the competition. "Though I created a Facebook account three years ago, I stopped using it when I entered class XI. After cracking JEE Advanced, I was gifted a smartphone by my father. Before this I never used a smartphone," he added.

This is great because it is pretty impressive because cracking this exam at such a young age is difficult. But it is a very proud fact that a 15 year old lad who is supposed to be in 10th cracked JEE Advanced.
