Take 5 With Musician Varun Ahuja

The Delhi-based musician who has played at many concerts and collaborated with Lucky Ali for his single ‘Alvida’, tells Deebashree Mohanty that the key to good music lies in the message it gives out

Tell us about your journey?

My journey started at the age of four when I picked up the guitar. With the first strum I knew this was going to be my calling. That first feeling is still alive! I wrote my first song when I was seven. In 2001, I joined as a drummer in a Delhi-based band called Cyanide. That was the first shift I had. Around 2006, I joined Aryans (as a drummer and then the bass player), a popular band from the ’90s. From then on it has been a very satisfying learning experience.

You have collaborated with many singers and bands. What is your takeaway?

Every band I played with and every singer I collaborated with took me forward. The experience of playing with stalwarts actually brought me closer to myself and my music. I can safely say that all these people have had a positive influence on me.

Your single ‘Alvida’, featuring Lucky Ali, how did that happen?

We (my co-writer and I) offered Lucky ‘Alvida’ at 1 am during a dinner meeting. When he heard it, Lucky said “ab ye toh karna hi hai.”

Why “hope” as a message?

Because the world needs hope. As an artist, the biggest contribution you can make to the society is to spread messages of love and hope. For me, love is a collective energy which has to be felt through music time and again.

Tips you would like to share..

The more you explore, the more you learn. You must play with people who have a lot to teach you. Be HUMBLE in your endeavour and be prepared to take failure in your stride. Perseverance, consistency and spontaneity are key qualities to be a good musician. The most important lesson though is to be original and bring out a message in any song that you compose.

What next?

I will be featuring in Rabbi Shergill’s next song, ‘Aadhi Kranti’ and am collaborating with Shibani Kashyap for a song on the influence of money.
