Sunil Gavaskar On Losing Your Throne

Serena Williams lost her No 1 spot at the US Open. Sunil Gavaskar, who watched the tournament and knows a bit about milestones, takes us into the mind of an athlete who has lost their throne

Serena Williams’ run of 186 weeks as the world’s No.1 player ended at the US Open. Sunil Gavaskar, a former world record holder and tennis follower, for insights into an athlete’s mind when he or she is toppled. Turns out Gavaskar was at the US Open himself. “As luck would have it I was at Flushing Meadows so saw the men’s semis, women’s final and men’s final,” he said in an email. Gavaskar reflected on his emotions when Allan Border broke his Test runsrecord and Sa chin Tendulkar surpassed him in Test centuries. “My emotions were one of relief when A B and Sachin went past my marks, perhaps more so when Sachin did it,” Gavaskar said.

“There was so much expectation and anticipation when Sachin neared the mark that it was me who may have been more relieved than Sachin.," Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar was gracious in applauding Border and Tendulkar. “It is only natural to congratulate the person who has gone past you,” he said.

When Border reached 10,000 Test runs, a frontier till then breached only by Gavaskar, the former Indian captain sent Border a fax. Those were pre-email days. And he gifted a crate of 34 champagne bottles to Tendulkar when the latter equaled his record of 34 Test tons, before eventually breaking it. Asked to confirm if his fax to Border read “Welcome to Mt Everest,” Gavaskar replied, “The fax I sent to AB was ‘welcome to club 10,000’ and not ‘Mt Everest’. Remember, at that time club 10,000 was more exclusive than Mt Everest since manymore had climbed the peak after Tenzing and Hilary. As for sending champagne, even during my playing career when I was captain of the team I would give some cricketing equipment to those who did well for the team as recognition for their contribution.”

Conversely, was there a gesture from the men Gavaskar surpassed on the way to his two famous records — Sir Don Bradman and the famously stingy Geoffrey Boycott? “I think Sir Don made some very complimentary comments after I went past his mark. Since Geoffrey still thinks he is ½ per cent better than me, he didn’t say anything.”.

Sportsmanship is a great virtue, and a Number 1 position is simply an encouragement. We mustn''t consider those numbers to be something that defines who we are. It is our inner potential that makes us *us*.

Sportsmanship teaches us to appreciate others on their achievements just the way they do when we achieve something. However we may feel a little bad for losing our thrones but someday it had to happen. And appreciating our recordbreakers with a smile on our face is the greatest accomplishment of a gentleman. Hats off to you sir.
