Stay Healthy And Happy In Spring

As the cooler nights start to give way to spring, people struggle to keep pace with the seasonal transition and the potential health risks posed by the change. The onset of a new season can be tricky, it can call for a change in routine that suits the weather. Here are five tips that will help you stay healthy and happy at this sensitive time.

WEAR FABRICS THAT BREATHE
Seasonal change comes with its own perils – the weather is neither too cold nor too warm. It is best to switch to light and breathable fabrics at this time of the year. Natural fabrics such as cotton and linen are good alternatives to synthetic fabrics. Change your dressing style a bit by opting for loose fitting clothes. And always carry a layering option with you.

BE PREPARED FOR CHANGING WEATHER INFECTIONS
Many people suffer from ailments such as common cold and viral infections because body takes time to adapt to any change in climate. While a preventive care approach is imperative, being prepared to face an unexpected illness is equally important. It is advisable to keep a healing balm as part of your first aid kit, as it eases the symptoms of common cold and is easy to carry. Use one that contains ingredients like camphor oil, mint extracts and nutmeg oil because they help provide quick relief from common cold. Also, keep your medical kit stocked with over the counter medicines.

GET YOUR SHARE OF SUNLIGHT, DAILY
Since sunlight is one of the best sources of Vitamin D (many Indians have vitamin D deficiency), soak in the sunrays in the morning (or mid-morning). It is a great way to rejuvenate your body and is also good for bone health. Sunlight gives you your share of vitamin D that is necessary to stay healthy and also to promote concentration. Therefore, make sure you spend at least 15 minutes in the sun everyday.

EAT LIGHT FOOD
Your body will require a constant supply of water and fluids to sustain itself. Heavy meals with large amounts of carbohydrates and fats give rise to a lot of heat in the body. A natural way of staying hydrated is ample intake of fruits and vegetables that have high water content – oranges, watermelons, tomatoes, etc. This helps balance your core body temperature and also keeps diseases at bay. Another benefit to upping  hydration level: your skin will stay clear and supple.

ENSURE REGULAR AND UNDISTURBED SLEEP
Sleep patterns can sometimes take a hit in changing weather. Intake of natural herbs like tagara can promote restful sleep. According to Ayurveda texts as well as current scientific research, having warm milk before bedtime acts like a natural sedative and promotes restful sleep. Another great way to get good sleep is to have your dinner 2.5 to 3 hours before bedtime. And make sure you sleep and get up at the same time. A consistent sleep schedule is the best sleeping aid – follow it, and you will get quality snooze time.
