Should The National Anthem Be Played In Theatres?

The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed all cinema halls to play the National Anthem prior to screening of a movie. Not only that, it also directed that people should rise and pay respect to the National Anthem. The move has got mixed reactions from across the board. From open criticism to memes, a lot has been already said about it.

Our youth reporters too seem divided over the move.

The national anthem is a binding force between us Indians. Ideally, it should be sung wherever possible, be it a theatre or sports meet. But It is not the subject of nationalism that must be put into discussion. What we need to check is the relevance of the idea put forward and the spirit in which it is taken. So if we have to play the anthem, it should get the respect it deserves. If not, there is no point in playing it.

The move executed was a perfect one. It will ensure that the fundamental duty of the article-51A is duly followed by an individual. This will also help to inculcate a feeling of patriotism in the youth.
Jnanam Shah, class X, SSRVM, Borivali (E)

This is a good initiative taken by the apex court. When people enjoy rights provided by the constitution, they must abide by the fundamental duties too. People must feel that India is their own country and they must respect its flag and its national anthem.
Nihal Jani, class IX, Sakar English School

National anthem is very important for a country and for a country India as this act will bind and unify nation. People should feel patriotic for the nation and that’s the biggest step we can make for our freedom fighters.  I honestly feel that one who don’t know how to respect or love their own country would never learn how to behave responsibly. In our busy lives, it surprises me no end that people even don’t have 52 seconds to pay respect and love for their own mother land whose sacrifices are innumerable.
Aditi Ingle, class X, SOS, Nagpur

It is not a just move according to me. We don't need to play the national anthem each time to instil the values of nationalism and love for the country. Playing the national anthem is not going to make people automatically develop these values. Moreover, forcing everyone to rise to pay respects is not okay. We remember the case when a wheelchair bound man was assaulted for not rising up. What kind of nationalism is this?
Sanjula Gupta, class XI, Bhavan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh

I think it is an illogical move. It is unreasonable to force-feed nationalism into people who come to the cinema halls in pursuit of entertainment. A country's National Anthem should be played at international sports events or diplomatic events and on national holidays. The Supreme Court says that it will instill a sense of patriotism in the citizens of our country. Then what about the people who cannot afford to go to cinema halls? How are they planning to instill nationalism in them? Moreover, if they have ordered to play the National Anthem before a movie screening then it should also be played before a play, a concert or any other stage programme.
Upasana Behera, class IX, DPS Newtown, Kolkata

I don't see why singing the National Anthem should be seen as a matter of pride? Of course, we should pay our respect to our National heritage but forcing someone to do something is not at all just. We have many more things to bother about in India. Why should a court decide what we need to do while watching a movie. There are better ways to pay respect to the National Anthem.
Aditi Bhattacharya, class IX, DAV Sreshta Vihar, New Delhi

What has the court said
  • “The directions are issued, for love and respect for the motherland is reflected when one shows respect to the National Anthem as well as to the National Flag. That apart, it would instil the feeling within one, a sense committed patriotism and nationalism,” said the bench, giving 10 days for compliance with its direction.
  • According to the top court, “a time has come, the citizens of the country must realize that they live in a nation and are duty bound to show respect to National Anthem, which is the symbol of the constitutional patriotism and inherent national quality.”
  • The court order, however, does not entail any penalty or punishment for not standing when the national anthem is played and hence, it remains to be seen how public authorities and those managing private cinema halls would ensure the direction is followed “in letter and spirit.”
  • Issuing a string of interim orders on a PIL filed by a retired engineer from Bhopal, Shyam Narayan Chouksey, the apex court further prohibited “commercial exploitation” of the anthem for incurring commercial benefits or using an abridged version of it, while adding the anthem cannot be dramatized and used in variety TV shows.
  • “It is because when the National Anthem is sung or played, it is imperative on the part of every one present to show due respect and honour. To think of a dramatized exhibition of the National Anthem is absolutely inconceivable…when the National Anthem is sung, the concept of protocol associated with it has its inherent roots in national identity, national integrity and constitutional patriotism” it held.

When is a country's national anthem played?
  • In international sporting events when teams represent countries.
  • In diplomatic events, when diplomats and officials represent the country.
  • On national days, when the country is celebrating the nation, such as independence or republic day.

National Anthem should be payed in cinema halls before the movie commences because people''s mentality is such that patriotism should only be displayed on 2 days in a year - Republic Day and Independence Day , which s really wrong . This move will surely help people to realise that we should first stop warring with other states of our own country.

Vihan R. Yalamanchili DDMS P.OBUL REDDY PUBLIC SCHOOL

The national anthem should be played in cinema theaters to instill patriotism amongst the people. However, standing up should not be made mandatory as long as the people who choose not to stand up don''t show any disrespect to the anthem. Making standing up to the anthem compulsory violates our right to freedom of speech and expression.

Sarath Kumar RM Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

It''s good playing National Anthem in theatres but the main thing is that people have to give respect to it.

Sarath Kumar RM Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Cinema halls are the places where people come for entertainment. People just think about fun and enjoyment. So in these places playing National Anthem is unworthy.

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

We don''t know if people will show enough respect to the anthem in movie halls. I think this must not be done.

BHUVANA.V Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School - Puducherry

This is really a good initiative from the government. In my view national anthem should be sung wherever possible. It creates a feeling of patriotism among us.

Aishwarya Iyer Deens Academy

This is a good move. It will instil a feeling of patriotism. As Indians, we should not feel as if this is being froced upon us. It is our duty to respect our motherland because she gives us a place to live. As for physically challenged people like those on the wheelchair, they can be exempted from this rule. We must understand there capacity. But there is another angle too, most diasbled people will not be able to come to the cinemas, especially people on the wheelchair.

Mahak Goyal SALWAN PUBLIC SCHOOL(RAJINDER NAGAR

It is a good decision made by the Supreme Court to promote our national anthem. I would support this decision until the citizens of our country do regard it and stand in respect throughout. This decision would also help in developing a sense of belongingness towards our motherland and a great sense of pride as the anthem reminds us of our rich diversity and culture. Also it would jog our memory about our enriching historical factors which would evolve that spark of patriotism.

Navomi J.M. INTERNATIONAL SCH00L

In my opinion, the order issued by the Supreme Court recently regarding the national anthem, which must be played before a film is screened, is unjust. There are many situations and avenues that warrant the national anthem, if the purpose is to make citizens realize their fundamental duties. I believe that patriotism is a spiritual quality which can only be proven by contributing to the welfare of the society and not by proving it every time before a film is screened in a cinema hall.

Ritvik Baweja BAL BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (PITAM PUR

The national anthem provides a sense of patriotism and pride for the nation. Definitely it should be made compulsory to be played before any important function or film as this will promote the nationalism amongst the citizens. Each and every citizen should stand for 52 seconds before a film to pay tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for ours. We should abide by this fundamental duty and pay respect to the decison by not criticising the apex court and not making fun of it

JIYA TOMAR B G S NATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

Candidly, I don''t veraciously think that this will enhance our patriotism as a whole, because today we have innumerable kinds of people spectating movies at cinema halls / movie theaters who perhaps can belong to other classes or moreover maybe of yet another nationality who would have come to watch a movie for entertainment purpose only and shall naturally find singing another nation''s national anthem queer.

Bhavana Jaison Atomic Energy Central School No 2

In Mumbai National Anthem is played in the theaters before the move starts. So this is nothing new for Mumbaikars.

Prakash.B Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Everyone must give respect to it...!!

Sachika Lala BGS National Public School

Yes, it is necessary for everyone who participated and is watching the movie to acknowledge that they have been able to do so only because India is free now. This sense of patriotism and realization should be instilled in the people.

Kashish Verma Bharti Public School Swasthya Vihar

Yes, I think that it should be played in cinema halls to develop a sense of patriotism and unity in all the Indians before the commencement of movie.

Dev Mehta Children''s Academy, Thakur Complex, Kandivli East

Yes , I believe it is right because its the pride of our Nation. Especially, We just feel nationalism on very selective dates like 15 Aug and 26 Jan . But listening to our national anthem deep inside we feel proud to be INDIANS !!

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

I don''t understand the motive.

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

Don''t you think it''s all of no use?

KAVYASRI R M Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

This is a good initiative.Inculcating the spirit of patriotism in Indians is a great move. But Indians should give due respect to it.Pride is not taken into consideration. It is the reverence and love we have for our motherland that matters.

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

That feeling of nationalism should come from within. Why play the anthem to arouse the feeling?

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

Instead, why can''t we have more films about our fighters ?

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

Instead of the other types of films people watch and spend money on, why not promote films about our sacrifices of the past?

Dherain Khilnani Edify School

If we play the national anthem before a television show at home, would people stand up? I doubt it. I haven''t met many people who are over patriotic about India. In conclusion, we go to theatres for entertainment not to prove any Patriotic feelings. And also people stand just for the sake of standing, it doesn''t come from their heart, then what is the point of doing it. Patriotism and cinema are apples and oranges

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

The rendition of National Anthem is an integral part of morning assemblies, national ceremonies, parades etc. But, I don''t think it should be made a part of theatre halls also. Different types of people go to the theatre halls to watch movies. Some may be patriotic but some may not be. And, one can''t force a person to do something without his/her permission. So, in my opinion, no National Anthem should not be played at cinema halls.

S.VIDHYAALAKSHMI SHREE NIKETAN MAT -

National anthem must be mandotary on theatres. This will create patriotism among the people . It is very good move by the government

sejal gupta Guru Gobind Singh Education Academy- Nerul

ITS GOOD IDEA OF OUR PM!!!!MODI

Hafsa Malwat F D SCHOOL

To sing national anthem shows our love and respect for our country. But we should not only sing national anthem but we should also work for country , we should do so.e this g good for our country.

Mayank Seth Anandram Jaipuria School

The National Anthem should be played in the cinemas because their are many people who don''t have the feeling of patriotism. Also,a strict checking should be their for seeing that the people are standing when the National Anthem is played. Strict fine should be imposed on d violators

T.BLESSIYA BEAUTY Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School - Puducherry

I welcome the judgement given by the Supreme court regarding the playing of our National Anthem in theaters. As students we get the chances of singing the National Anthem either in schools or in colleges. But as the elders they do not get that chance. So playing the National Anthem in public places like theaters will surely kindle the patriotism in the people. As a true citizen, everyone should give respect to the National Anthem which is played before the movie commences.

SNEHA - R Kulapati munshi bhavan's vidhya mandir

If the National Anthem is played in theaters then it may be open to criticism and insults of people with unsound minds. This will prove to be a negative factor for the integrity and dignity of the nation. The fundamental duty has a greater threat of being violated.

S PAVITHRA Little Flower Matric. Hr. Sec. School

Good move by the Apex court to unite the people with patriotism and re-generate the national integrity

Darshil Shah ST. XAVIERS - LOYOLLA -2 LOYOLLA 2

Yes it is a great move to play National Anthem in the theaters as it will bring awareness of nationalism.
