Should Homework Be Scrapped? Your Take

This feature is inspired by a school in Essex, UK which has scrapped homework so that the teachers can devote more time to plan lessons. The principal of the school said that “there are not enough hours in the day for a teacher to teach, set homework, mark homework, and plan their lessons.”  There are others who argue that for students too homework is “a waste of time” and should immediately be abolished.

Homework is a burden
Many students opine that after spending nearly eight hours in school, their mind and body is completely exhausted. “Most adults work similar lengths of time at work and come home exhausted. Yet they don’t understand how difficult it is to remain focused after school hours,” lamented a student.

Too much of homework often discourages students from socialising and play which hampers their overall development. “It is very difficult to do the homework of so many subjects and then study for tests. And if we don’t complete our homework on time then we have to come up with innovative excuses or face the wrath of our teachers. We don’t get any time to relax and indulge in our hobbies.  And in the end they say 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” said Rhea Mane, class VIII, Pawar Public School, Bhandup, Mumbai.
Sometimes students get excessive homework due to lack of coordination among teachers. “There are days when we don’t get any homework and on other days we have so much of homework that it’s a race against time to finish it,” pointed out a student.

There is a merit in the argument that the time spent in school should be enough to take care of students learning needs. “If eight hours of learning at school is not enough then there is something inherently wrong with our education system. If can restructure our education then there is no need for homework,” opined a student.
There were many students who mentioned that adults like to go out after work and spend time with friends. Students also deserve the same luxuries. "Don’t expect a student to remain switched on the entire day.”
Homework is necessary

Most of the teachers we talked to believe that homework does have a positive effect on students learning outcomes. Homework reinforces the learning they do in the classroom and serves as an assessment for the teachers; they can tell which concepts have the students mastered and which need more attention. “It's not just teachers but many students too see homework as a necessary method of reviewing concepts taught during the school day. It builds confidence in children, when they learn to do certain academic activities on their own. Homework also trains students in time management and empowers them to balance academics and leisure,” said Padmaja Limaye, teacher, Fr Agnel’s School, Vashi, Navi Mumbai. Some teachers also pointed out that homework is necessary, especially in mathematics, science and grammar as these topics need regular practice.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater?
“This debate is not and should not be framed as a binary choice between lots of homework that adds to sleep deprivation and stress or no homework at all. Homework, when properly assigned, is more than rote memorisation. Also parents can use homework to keep tabs on their child’s progress,” explained Runa Sarker, PGT History, Navy Children School, Mumbai. A teacher said that homework is all about building your skills. “How many math problems does it take to learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide? The answer: as many as it takes. That’s why students must have some sort of activity to reinforce concepts.” There are other who believe that homework should be more of activity based. Watch a video. Listen to a podcast, read an article. Teachers must find attractive ways of engaging students post school hours.

No , homework’s should not be scraped but can be made interesting. Usually teachers give home works to lessen their burden. It should not be like that. Home work should be planned in such a way that it should create an interest and curiosity for the child to do it. It should not be a burden .

Kirti gupta BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

I don''tthinkso because homework is an essential part of studies which should not be abolished because it help in regular basis studies . Homework should be there but in a limit that can easily be done by students at there home.

Khushi Sharma BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Homework is not a waste of time as it aids one in revising the concepts taught in class but excess of everything is bad. Similarly excessive homework steals student''s time which could be better utilised in self-study and co-curricular activities.

Ragini Thottassery Swami Vivekananda International

I think homework of each subject a day should be less comparatively because if a student gets lots of activities and questions as a homework for each subject then it becomes a burden. Also the homework should be given on alternate days.

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

I don''t really think homework should be abolished, because it is a way to ensure that children keep up with their studies so that they can escape peer pressure during exams. But excess homework must be abolished, because it will make students do it just because they have to, thereby no fulfilling the very purpose of homework.

Ritvik Baweja Bal Bharati Public School

If a child doesn''t revise what he has done in school then there is no use of learning. Not only homework help is to learn things quickly but it also ensures our full practices. By scrapping homework, the child will become lazy and instead of constant practice , will escape from studying. But yes I agree that the amount of homework given should be reduced, so that the child is not burdened.

Dhruv Badaya Delhi Public School Jaipur

I think that homework should be removed from school curriculum because the students get a lot of burden. Moreover, many children force their parents to do their homework which later become a bane. Rather, timings of schools should be increased, so that children can do their homework in school without taking help from their parents.

V.A.Tanmai PBDAV MODEL SCHOOL

Homework has historically been given to students to reinforce what they learn at school, and ultimately to help them learn the material better. So I don''t think that scrapping out homework will be better. However, too much of homework is not helpful and can be counter-productive.Child may also loose interest in that subject.Homework should not be abolished but should be limited and creative so that the child may enjoy doing it.

Om Badiyani Sandipani

Ho,e work shouldn''t be scraped but it should be given in a limit. Excess of home work is a lot of burden and does not give time for our passion and extra activities.

Rajathariga S P AECS MAGNOLIA MARUTHI PUB SCH

Certain types of homeworks are a waste of time. Schools should give homeworks that improve the students creativity and will help them think outside the box.

Anna Thomas SBOA SCHOOL & JUNIOR COLLEGE

Homework plays an important part in our studies but overloading us with the same is burden . Some teachers ask us to learn paragraphs and paragraphs for essay writing, instead we could just understand what we should write. At other times, teachers ask us to rewrite our notes more than five times . Once we come home we only have time to do our homework and don''t have time to even step out. To make things even worse, those who do not complete their work will have to face punishment

Hiya Kilam global indian internatonal school

If a child does not do some work at home, he or she will never understand whatever has been taught in school. May it be biology, algebra, history, geometry or anything, it needs to be revised at home as well for a better understanding. Many students find homework a burden. Homework should be simple, short and interesting so that it does not seem like a burden.

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

No,homework should not be scraped but should be planned in such a manner that it creates interest among students. It builds confidence to do the task individually and also teaches the students to manage time .

arcot.indupriya PBDAV MODEL SCHOOL

Research in the last decade has begun to focus on the relationship between homework and student achievement and has greatly strengthened the case for homework. homework helps teachers determine how well the lessons and material are being understood by their student.homework helps students develop responsibility and life skills and the ability to manage tasks and that it provides experiential learning.homework is practice and practice makes perfect.

Aditi Sahi D C MODEL SCH PKL-SEC-7

no,homework is definitely not a waste of time and should not be abolished but of course if a lot of homework is given on a single day then it becomes a burden.Homework schedule are the best way to tackle problems if the schedule is followed effectively.

Brenda Marshal PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

No not at all. Homework is not a waste of time but is a way to practice what we have learned. It should not be scrapped because if it will be scrapped the indirect way of students to learn will also get over. ^_^

MELISSA FERNANDES FATIMA H SCH-AMBERNATH

homework is necessary but on a certain condition....have a limit and just not pour like a flowing river on the shoulders of the children............It should be more practical than just theory...........It should be easy enough so that students do their own job and not the parents...........

Darshil Shah ST. XAVIERS - LOYOLLA -2 LOYOLLA 2

Homework is definitely a waste of time. Instead of homework they can conduct frequent tests and test the students knowledge. There is no need of homework. Because of homework we don''t get time to study for our exams and during the exams days we get pressurized. I definitely disagree with the giving of homework.

Pallavi singh PRESENTATION CONVENT(RED FORT)

Most of the homework given in schools does not enhance studedent''s learning in any manner. The homework is about copying from books to noteboooks, maintaining registers and files. Small amount if homework given that enhances student''s learning is of no harm. The homework should inculcate besides academics an optional work in which students can do anythying they want like painting, writing, reading, choreography which they can share with classmates.

N C Thomas SBOA SCHOOL & JUNIOR COLLEGE

Yes homework is a waste of time. We are not getting enough time to study. We are spending too much time on homeworks. Instead of that we can spend our time usefully on studies.

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

Homework is definitely not to be abolished. But one way to reduce the burden of homework is to make it more innovative. It can be in the form of projects or inter-disciplinary tasks or research-based tasks. This will be something apart from the textbook studies and interesting to the students. On the other hand, the amount of work being given can surely be reduced to provide time for other activities.

Madhuri. B.V Soundarya school

Homework can never be a waste of time only when it is interesting and students enjoy doing it. For example students enjoy browsing interesting facts about their subject. So teachers can give homework which is more fun to do and more practical.

Rohan Gupta KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA(SHALIMAR BAGH)

Homework is a never a waste of time. But today''s modern day students get bored with the usual and boring homework. In my views instead of totally scrapping the homework, the teacher should look for ways to make the homework a little bit interesting so that we are not bored.

PRAVEEN MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE -VI

Homework is great. It will help children learn more and bring children''s test scores up. It can also improve children''s grade up and higher than what an average child can do. It can also help refashion children''s brains about what learned in there classes. Home work is also lots of fun when you know how to do it.

P.Ahalya kendriya vidyalaya trimulgherry

home works should not be abolished but home works should be minimized.Students are said to rewrite the things that are written in the textbook. This thing should be abolished

Vishnu Varthan J Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Doing homework gives us a stress. Homework creates pressure in some of the student. Homework should not be an assignments or any other writing part it should be in giving education in home also. We can learn news, science , or any part other than school works. Such that students will have interest towards education.

Sharmeen Khan PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Homeworks should not be termed the reason for depression in children. Homeworks are an essential part of a students life . They should not be scraped defining them as a burden. Homeworks should be given in such a way that the children look forward to doing it. More activity based homeworks can be given as a part of learning. As they say ''Involve me and I learn''.

T. Sree Alekhya SENTIA GLOBAL SCHOOL

Homework is really important in a students life. Homework help us to practice more and study well. We will have more grip on the topic only if we do our homework. So, i don''t think homework should be scrapped.

I think that too much homework is being burden for children but it should not be scrapped. Homework is a best way to improve our learning and writing skills.

Actually, In India homework is not problem but problem is in our education system. Are we studying for earning money? NO. We are studing to become good person in society. But is our education system making us good person?

Sarath Kumar RM Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

I don''t think homework is waste of time. It helps the student to learn more about the subject . But homework should be less and it should not create any pressure on the students.

Sarath Kumar RM Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Homework helps the student to have a touch with their lessons. It will be very helpful during the time of examinations.

R.Rithika Reddy JOHNSON GRAMMAR HIGH SCHOOL, ICSE

Homework should be given but in less quantity. Homework should be some exciting activity in which students show interest .

Shubhangi Sharma RYAN INTL. ROHINI ROHINI

I think homework should be scrapped. Instead better learning at schools should be promoted. Homework limits the child to studies and often leads to time mismanagement. And for reviewing the child studies as a parent, ptm and exams are enough. Instead of homework a topic can be given to be discused with parents or friends. Also , students should give there honest cooperation if such a change is brought😊.

Hansika bhardwaj PRESENTATION CONVENT(RED FORT)

I think that homework is waste of time and it should be scrapped as it is something by which at times student do not take out time to study whereas homework is sometimes important in which they get practice paper to practice

Rajath.K.Patil Kulkarni ST.MARY''S CONVENT & PUBLIC SCHOOL (STATE &

I think homework should not be scrapped because most of us do not revise our lessons after reaching home,so it provides an opportunity to atleast we can learn something from what we write. They are importamt.,but a burden of homework make students feel uncomfortable.

Harini.V Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Homework shouldn''t be a burden. It should be interesting. Our education system must completely change. Then only it is possible. But teachers can give less homeworks to students. Students should learn something out of their textbooks at home. But most of the narrow minded teachers say, it is enough if they learn textbooks and score marks. This mentality of the teachers must change and parents should also understand it.

Jhanvi Joshi Delhi public School

homework can be too interesting or too boring. limiting the amount of homework given and adopting new, interesting and innovative measures would boost up the willingness to complete it in students.

Tanvi Vaswani Nalanda Public School

homework should not be scraped as it is a way of revising the material. With already so much to, students don''t get time to revise the study material. A little homework in each subject will help the material be fresh in a child''s mind. More importantly, a child must also understand the importance of homework.

D SOWMIKA AMRITA VIDYALAYAM SR SEC SCH

Teachers should give limited homework. If it is scrapped it may affect the weak children . Students should do the homework with interest. Homework is not a burden , it is a practice.

Rohit Raju Naresh Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Taylors Road

Schools must give students more innovative ways to do homework such as doing experiments at home and seeing videos etc.,.

vaibhav joshi CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL NOIDA (NOIDA)

yes, homework should be scraped as in some schools children can get homework as early as kindergarten, or by the third grade. Homework has been annoying many children by the fourth grade. At elementary school, especially, this is a bad idea because many young students are known for having very short attention spans.

JIYA JAIN Ryan International School

Homework should be scrapped as I dont get time for self study or for my recreational activity

Jaie Thakre BLUE RIDGE PUBLIC SCHOOL

Homework should not be abolished because it is an important part of studies but there should be a limit. Four homework a day is quite sutable. It should also be something which children can enjoy but it should never be a burden

BHAVYA TUTEJA NEW ERA PUBLIC SCHOOL(MAYAPURI)

No, not at all. Homework should not be scrapped. It''s useful for children. Homework allows children to study for their tests and go over the work they did in school. It allows them to work at their own pace. Homework makes a child responsible as if they forget doing it , they will have to face consequences. And as it is said -'''' Pratice makes a man perfect'''', More they do their homework, more they will practice which makes a man perfect..

Homeworks are an inevitable part of student life.It should not be or can''t be scrapped.

JANARTHANAN S Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School

Home works are important but it should not affect interest and happy.homewors can be the project not writing works.

Aman.kumar Sree Narayana Vidya Bhavan

Homework reinforces the learning they do in the classroom and serves as an assessment for the teachers they can tell which concepts have the students mastered and which need more attention.

Sanjana Mehta G.D. GOENAKA PASCHIM VIHAR

We should not throw the baby out with the bath. Homework, today is a burden for most students, but that is because, homework most of the time is what was left out in class work. that does not spark interest in the child to do it. If some aspect is not perfect, we should improve on it instead of just scrapping it. Homework, if given in the right amount, time and made interesting, it can be a delight for the kids to do while at the same time aiding their studies.

S.VIDHYAALAKSHMI SHREE NIKETAN MAT -

Instead of giving too much of writing homework, teachers can give interesting homework based on the activities given in the lesson .

While homework is intended to have a good impact on the child''s learning, these days, it has become a burden. Children are given excess homework which takes 1.5 - 2 hours.Children view homework as a time-waste and pointless thing. This results in us not getting enough time to pursue hobbies and play, which is also very important in a growing child''s life. The amount of homework given is definitely a subject that needs lot of re-considering and re-planning. HW in correct amounts is helpful.
