Should Celebs Not Endorse Junk Food?

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has recommended a complete ban on celebrities endorsing foods high in salt, sugar or fat...

Delivering her opening address at a workshop in New Delhi , Sunita Narain, Director General, CSE, said, "The government is considering amending the Consumer Protection Act to provide for five-year jail term or a penalty of Rs 50 lakh to hold celebrities responsible for false and misleading claims. "But the same amendment says that there will be no liability if precautions are taken and due diligence is done before deciding to endorse a product. In other words, this amendment amounts to nothing."

The expert committee on Consumer Protection Bill, 2015 has recommended a penalty of Rs 10 lakh and imprisonment of up to two years or both for a first offence by a celebrity responsible for false and misleading claims. The penalty is Rs 50 lakh and five-year imprisonment for a second offence.

"But there are two problems with this proposal — one, manufacturers have not been held equally guilty and two, celebrities may not understand the science behind the claims and conduct due diligence," said Amit Khurana, Programme Manager, Food Safety and Toxins team, CSE.

Some of the suggestions made by CSE are strengthening nutrition facts labeling system, ascertaining nutrients, approving food advertisements, banning celebrities from endorsing foods high in salt, sugar or fat and instituting and enforcing stringent legal and financial penalties for misleading claims.

CSE is right when it says that celebs shouldn''t endorse junk food. Almost every brand promoted by big personality has false claims, which misleads people. Sometimes the nutritional values are false too. Moreover the victims of such false claims are often children who force their parents to buy such junk food items. Therefore it is justified imposing fine on such celebs and brands.

Yes, We should strictly ban junk food. And also stop celebs to advertise junk food. Because it''s harmful for our health and this also increase Plastic Waste. Children learn everything very quickly. And they also try to follow elders. And if children watch celebs advertising junk food , they will also try to follow them. They can''t understand what is right and wrong. That only follow them blindly. And when they come to its harmful, already their health had become harmful.

It seems that children have addiction with Junk food. So, Celebs are quickly stopped to advertise Junk Food.

Celebs only think of the payment they get by advertising for certain food products. Those advertising for alcoholic drinks know very well the effects of alcohol on the viewers specially teenagers but still they are hungry for money.

Children are always crazy after their favourite celebrities. And if the celebrity endorses any product then child wants it on any condition. I think celebs should be concerned about their little fans. They should endorse healthy food.

Om Badiyani Sandipani

No, celebs should not endorse junk food because people highly believe in them and get attracted towards it only because a particular celebrity is endorsing it.

Kedari Puthalapattu Radcliffe School,Balnagar

Yes, they shouldn''t support these junk foods and advertising about that. As they are the role models who is frequently shown on the screen and people follow that. This shouldn''t be encouraged.

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

No, they shouldn''t. By endorsing products, celebrities leave an indelible impact on their fans to consume that particular product of that brand. It is very important that they should not choose products for endorsement by face but should also go for its quality as it will affect their die-heart fans who will consume them in gullibility.

Celebrities should definately ban the publicity of junk food. The new generation is blindly following them and getting a bad impact. The celebrities should leave it in the sense and should do something which is benefitial for the society as ultimately they would also get the same effect. Amitabh Bachchan did the ad for Coke and he suffered a serious health problem.

Yes, Celebs should not advertise about junk food because when a child sees his favourite actor advertising about a junk food then the child tries to buy and consume that food. So I think this should be stopped.

Ananya Arora Bhavan Vidyalaya Panchkula

Celebrities should avoid endorsing junk foods as it misguides people. Also, the next generation, which is mad about television, is misleaded causing itself harm. They surely have to earn their bread, but it can also be done by spreading awareness among the children regarding fattening foods.

Amritansh Sharma Sandipani

Celebs shouldn''t endorse junk food because people blindly follow them. For example ''Maggi'' the famous noodles, were promoted by Famous celebs like Amitabh Bachhan and Madhuri Dixit, people consumed it and when the results of Fassai came, It was dangerous for health! So they shouldn''t endorse junk food because innocent people may get harmed.

Jasneet Singh JASPAL KAUR PUBLIC SCHOOL(SHALIMAR

I feel that stoping celebrities from endorsing junk food is a good step. But along with this all endorsements about junk food should be stopped. Along with this stringent measures should be taken to see that school canteens provide healthy and nutritious food only and parents should also counsel children to stay away from junk food

Parishi Mishra RED ROSES SCHOOL SAKET R0554D

Any brand or product which is advertised by celebs are blindly bought by people and the brand or product gains a high profit. So celebs should definitely not promote junk food and they should always be totally aware about the product for which they are advertising.

Yes I agree to what CSE tells that celebrities shouldn''t be allowed to endorse junk food as there are people who blindly follow them and buy products advertised by their favourite stars without even knowing the complete details about the product. But if celebs are do endorsing then they should know the correct information about the product and then endorse it. We believe in celebs and they should not break this belief of ours by advertising such products which are harmful.

In my view, there is nothing wrong if celebrities endorse junk food. Junk food has to be eaten only once in while and that''s what they are manufactured for. I believe that no company manufactures junk foo to play with human life. It would be good if celebrities stress the community, especially the young ones, not to have them often. But, for them it is better to think twice whether the product causes any hazard to the consumers.

Srividya AIR FORCE SCHOOLYEL

Only after when the claims are satisfied, celebs should endorse because many people get to know about the product because of the popular celebs endorsing it or would have not chosen the product

Celeb''s are the role model of children''s life. And children''s mainly follow them blindly they used to never thought about right and wrong. They never used to listen parent''s.So I think Star''s have not to do such thing''s which can harm children''s life.

Sanskruti Kanbargi Sandipani

CSE is right, as children follow their favourite celebs. So junk food advertisements should be stopped and celebs should be prohibited for promoting junk food advertisements. Mainly every brand is promoted by a famous celeb, and as children follow them they face many diseases like food poisoning which is very harmful. Many packed food items fail in hygiene tests, but we still find them promoted by celebs.

Unnati JASPAL KAUR PUBLIC SCHOOL(SHALIMAR

Not only celebs, no one should endorse in junk food. But being a celeb, they need to be a bit more conscious about their physical address. Nevertheless, being a foody can be contradicted by workout and while their food habits can affect youth''s mindset, the same can their fitness freak attitude do.
