Self Study Scores Better Grades: TOIStudents

It was reported in the media that this year 5,539 students (52.4%) out of the 10,576 who got admission to IITs had studied on their own. Those who went to coaching centres comprised 44.5% (4,711) of successful candidates. The remaining 2% either took individual tuition or did correspondence courses. The trends from this year's JEE (advanced) were analysed by IIT-Guwahati. A detailed analysis of this year's JEE (advanced) shows that IITs are still urban-centric+ with 75% of successful students coming from cities and the rest from rural areas.

In India, 32% of school children go to tutions for Maths And Chemistry; while 12% attend extra classes for Accounts!

Given that such a high percentage of our students go for extra classes or after class tutions; self study had become just a term! A survey conducted by California institute goes to show that self study or at-home study yields better results almost 78% of times.

Do TOIParents Agree?

Yes. I do. My son in class XII and I am confident that he will ace his class. He has never gone for any tutions. It was his personal choice and we supported it. He got decent grades in class X. Instead of cribbing and forcing him to take up classes like his other friends, I encouraged him to study as he felt comoftable. Today, he is thorough in most of his subjects and tops his class often. Even if he doesn't pass with distinction, I shall still be very proud of him.

Hemlata Dwivedi, parent of Aryan who studies in class XII, Amity

I am not in favour of after class tutions at all. But I was forced to put my daughter in Hindi classes because Hindi is not our language and there is no support she receives from us. For Maths, she has always managed on her own. We did enroll her for scinece tutions, but my daughter faced a lot of peer pressure and that showed on her performance. She is doing much better without it.

Parikha Das, parent of Ritu Das, class XI

Personally, I am not in favour of tutions at all. It is a waste of money. But times have changed. Nowadays our kids need some guidance after school. It has become a compulsion. Although I feel if teachers taught well and finished syllabus on time, there should be no need for extra coaching. When it comes to professional degress, I strongly feel tutions will give our kids an upper edge.

Meenakshi Varman, Chennai

Do TOI Students Differ?

I go for Maths tutions because my teacher in the class doesn't teach well. He concentrates on students who attend his tution classes only. I struggled on my own for 8 months before I was forced to enroll in his class. He charges a bomb too. It is nothing great but at least I feel I belong to a group. Such teachers should be punished. They are the ones who encourage tutions.

Amarnath Tripathy (name changed), Delhi

Yes I go for tutions and I am not coy about it. I still cannot understand why kids, parents feel it is demeaning to go for extra classes. I feel coaching and guidance is very crucial for any exam. That is exactly what a tutor is there for. It is not possible for a class teacher to pay attention to each and every student in the class. Therefore the necessity of extra class.

Aditya, class VIII, FAPS, Delhi

Personally, I would never go for tutions. But my parents feel I will lag behind if I don't attend extra classes and tutions for specific subjects. Strangely they don't feel the need to send me to tutions for humanities subjects! There was a noticeable difference in my scoring after I had joined tution classes though.

Sharanya Patnaik, class IIV, Mothers International school, Delhi

Experts Tell You What Is The Right Age For Tutions

I am totally against sending kids for after school classes when he/she is in primary sections. Even if you feel the need to send your child for extra guidance; be sure it is only for senior secondary sections. Sending a child (below the age of 12) for tutions means who are not allowing him/her to realise his inherent potential. Give them time to discover themselves, only then you could decide whether it was enough or your ward needs assistance.

I dont support any one thing. But the quality of teaching of teachers is still better. Some times self study is better. But most times teachers are better. But nowadays even teacher cheats the student for money, So it just depends on the teacher and i q level of the child. schools already alow the students to enter by 2 or 3 years of their age. But parents are one to know the right age of a child to join tutions . If the child joins tutions at age of 3 or 4 it will be a burden for them.

Amish Agarwal Goldcrest High Vashi

Self study involves in understanding root concepts, which a student will never tend to forget. In tutorials and tuitions, students are being spoonfed with ready-made notes and they just mugg up the thing, which is actually futile for the purpose of long term retaining. Self study also motivates a child to think more to get hold of some topic. It is important to have a broader vision in every topic, so self studying at times also helps in development of curiosity to know more

Heti Desai SRI SRI RAVI SHANKAR

No, i dont think so that self study is good at all . The things which we study with our friends and along with our teacher are more interesting than on studying on our laptops. It teaches us to be friendly along with being interactive . Online study always creates our mood to be on laptop . So school is cool.....

Archisha Ghosh VIDYA VALLEY

Archisha Ghosh, VidyaValley School I think tuition after school not a good idea to score better. Most of the coaching classes are now a days so much crowded , I don''t think the student get enough scope to clear his/her doubts. Not only that the time spent for going and coming back for the tuition can be utilised for selfstudy which will be probably more fruitful .

Betsy Jaison PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Self study is the best way to equip oneself with up to date knowledge . while going for a tuition children will be learning what the tuition teacher teach or he/she knows . But through self study they will be able to explore and travel through many interesting fact that creates interest in the subject .

Om Badiyani Sandipani

Self study helps us to study according to out concepts. While when we go to tuitions we have to study according to the concept of teachers. I always prefer self study and find that it helps.

Kritika Malhotra Indira National School

I feel that going to tuitions and coaching classes should happen only when the need is felt. It should be the students decision to take up coaching classes. Also the student should take the decision to join the classes independently, not under the pressure from anybody- friends or family. I also feel that self study may be a good option only if the student finds it how cup of tea. Some students need help with studies and therefore self study does not help them, though it works out well for me.

I TOTALLY BELIEVE IN SELF-STUDY WHICH IS THE REASON FOR MY BEING THE TOPPER OF MY CLASS.FROM THE FEEDBACK I RECEIVED FROM MY TUTION-GOING FRIENDS,TUTIONS ARE JUST A BURDEN ON THE BURDENED CHILD.ATTENDING SCHOOL AND THEN TUTIONS AND THEN COMING HOME AND DOING SCHOOL AND TUTION HOMEWORK TAKES UP SO MUCH TIME THAT THE CHILD HAS NO RECREATIONAL TIME LEFT. I don''t at all believe in tuitions. I used to go for tuitions in kannada until seventh, and I realized that going there for that one hour just made me sleep. Settling down wasted more time than anything else could. Moreover, tuitions just made me byheart stuff, while self studies actually made me think.

Self study is the best study. It is really true but till the extent when you know the real meaning of self studies. Self Study is the material which you have interest to study in, and it happens best when you are fresh and in a good mood. No one can teach you better then your self as you understand yourself the best and can teach your self something great which may make you a better future.

harshraj NATIONAL VICTOR PUBLIC SCH(PATPARGA

i support the self study because by self study we can enhance more knowdge than that os listening of other . we can do more work than that doing tutions as i have few experience of my friends that thej had joined coaching and beacause of it they lack in there studies they also have to skip school flor it .

Dev Manwani FR AGNEL MULTIPURPOSE SCHOOL-AMBERN

tutions or classes should be avoided, children are getting proper education in the school. The students go to the school and come from the school and then rush for their extra classes, then doing the school home work, doing classes work, all this stress their life, and also due to this they may get affected by over studies and they might not get proper sleep at night. this also can affect them mentally as well as physically. So the classes should be avoided

Hargun Kochhar GYAN BHARTI SCHOOL(SAKET)

I think self study is very important to understand the concepts but sometimes self studies don''t work because students needs someone to make them understand the topic so I don''t support any one thing but feel that both tuition and self study are imporant.

Anirudh Kaushik DAV PUBLIC SCHOOL, SRESHTHA VIHAR

I don''t get the point of students going to the tuitions at all. Nowadays, we have exceptional channels on YouTube and mind blowing videos by other websites. The teachers teach far better by not charging a single penny. Plus, I''ve seen students going to the school and not listening in the class. Why do they come to school when they have to study everything from their tuitions? This is so ironical situation in India for as if now.

Anirudh Kaushik DAV PUBLIC SCHOOL, SRESHTHA VIHAR

Only self study can help in this long run. :'')

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

I go to mathematics tuition thrice a week. The reason behind this is that I am not able to understand a single question which is taught by my Mathematics teacher in the class. The main problem lies is if one is taking too much time in travelling from home to tuition and back. But some children go for tuitions when they are in V, VI or VII grade. I think that this stands out to be too early for them and they become dependent on tuitions completely.

keerthana NSN MATRI HR.S.S ( CHROMPET )

i just hate going to classes after school because it is like forcing children to read their subject. reading without interest gives nothing,it is really waste.make read by their own. don''t force them

Aditi Sahi D C MODEL SCH PKL-SEC-7

Self study is really the best way to study.I think if students pay enough attention and concentrate in class they could actually do well and clearing their doubts in class could also help them to let go of their hesitation.

Himanshu sharma DAYANAND PUBLIC SCHOOL(MODEL TOWN)

Yes self study scores better grades. As we all know some subjects we have to study at our own. No tutor can teach us we habe to study at oir own tutions are wasting of money study at your own guys.

Ananya Sharma Salwan Public School

Everyone in this world see the same thing but there are innovators who observe it and understand it in their own way and develop something new and creative. This can only happen when a child studies on his own and understand the concept in his own way. I think self study is the best as the child gets to understand in his/her own way, rather than going to tuitions and learning by rot. tuitions demotivate the child so I think self study is the best.

Pranshu Choudhary INDIARAPURAM PUB SCH INDIRAPURAM GZ

Tutions are really a necessity if any one want to score good marks. Anyone or not but no one studies in school ... no one prefer studying over enjoying with friends excepting some really nice kids.Tutions are also neccerary as in schools teachers just want to finish there syllabus no matter if the student understand it or not.

Ritvik Baweja Bal Bharati Public School

A child who doesn''t want to study is forced to go to tutions or a tutor is hired, in this case the child would not be able to manage his school studies as well as balance the tution studies. Self study should be habit incubated in the children, by this practice they are encouraged to learn more analytically and not just mug up. When we read the concepts on our own we are able to learn them by heart no other teacher can make us learn if we don''t have the feeling to learn ourselves.

Sachika Lala BGS National Public School

It is always better to study on your own. You can always explore your own new ideas and have your own formulas and understandings to make the topics easier. It does not confuse us and we are used to it, which makes it easy to use.

Kashish Verma Bharti Public School Swasthya Vihar

Yes, definitely self study makes a student more perfect and he can revise in a better way.

Bhavana Jaison Atomic Energy Central School No 2

Yes, this is in fact true that majority of the children go for tuition for maths and science besides been Intelligent. They don''t believe in their potential or misguided that with out tuition nothing is possible.

Darshil Shah ST. XAVIERS - LOYOLLA -2 LOYOLLA 2

I completely disagree with self-study. You ought to have a teacher for yourself. Schools are very necessary to prepare a student for his dream. They not only gives you knowledge but also teaches you how to gain success in life with good and honest means.
