Science Decodes Subtle, Physical Impact Of Smile

A smile is priceless, or so they say. Sometimes a smile can convey more than a feeling of warmth, however. A smile could also just be plain mean or demeaning, depending on the message it's trying to communicate. A recent study for instance, reveals that a smile supposed to convey dominance creates a physical reaction amounting to 'a spike in stress hormones' in the person it is conveyed to.

The research established three key types of smiles that are most commonly used for conveying different messages.

Smile #1. Dominance. Meant to convey status.

Smile #2. Affiliation. Meant to communicate that you are not a threat and want to build a bond.

Smile #3. Reward. The big, radiant smile you would give someone to let others know you are making them happy.

"Facial expressions really do regulate the world. We have that intuition, but there hasn't been a lot of science behind it," said the study led by Jared Martin, a psychology graduate student at the University of Wisconsin Madison in the US. Our results show that subtle differences in the way you make facial expressions while someone is talking to you can fundamentally change their experience, their body, and the way they feel like you are evaluating them," states Martin.

The team stressed out college students for the study published in the journal Scientific Reports, by giving them a series of short, impromptu speaking assignments, which were judged over a webcam by a fellow student. People with greater variation in their heart beats have shown to be able to better understand social cues and expressions, such as a smile.

"If they received dominance smiles, which they would interpret as negative and critical, they felt more stress, and their cortisol went up and stayed up longer after their speech," said co-author Paula Niedenthal, Professor at the varsity.
