Religion Decides The Role One Plays: Discuss

Includes TV, Theatre, Movie

"Lord Shiva gave me many a sleepless nights and a very tough time," said actor Mohit Raina, who essayed the role of 'Mahadev' for 3 years before he decided to quit. "My fans would touch my feet to greet me. Some lashed out at me because I had consumed alcoholic beverage at a social do! I was expected to behave like Shivji in the malls, at the airport,  while buying groceries,  the fanaticism started to get to me," the actor complained.
This is not a one-off incident where a real person playing the role of God or any mythological being had been harassed by the public.

Arun Govil Says Lord Ram Made It Difficult For Him to Breathe Free
Another actor who suffered due to an on screen characterisation was Arun Govil aka Lord Rama. "I had to eat,  drink,  sleep and interact as if I was God.  My relatives would seek my blessings before starting something new or auspicious.  It may seem ridiculous, but people take these roles very seriously in India," he tells you. Govil was once refused entry into a suburban Mumbai resto bar because it was "not befitting"  lord ram!

Rupu Ganguly Said She Couldn't Buy Jeans For Herself!
Strange as it may sound, but yesteryear actress Rupu Ganguly who played Draupadi in Mahabharat said shopkeepers wouldn't allow her to enter the western section.  "They would constantly take out saree in pale colours from their shelves.  One merchant even told me that jeans are not meant for women who were as" pious as Draupadi!" she recalls her ordeal.

In Theatre Too Roles Are Decided On Your Religion / Caste
Nawazuddin Siddiqui was recently turned away from a Ramleela performance on the grounds of him being a Muslim.  The actor who has carved a niche for himself in Bollywood said he never felt so humiliated.  "Roles of the Gods are decided on the basis of religion and even caste. It is unfortunate but true," he points out.

Should it be the case then? We asked youth Reporters for their opinion on this.

Youth Reporters Say Religion Shouldn't Matter When You Play Role

It is not fair that you land up roles on the basis of your religion. Why can't a Muslim actor play a Hindu God? Bollywood is still far better but small screen and theatre suffer from such dichotomy.  Aditya Goswami, class X II,  Amity  School,  New Delhi

Heights of intolerance this is.  Why should an actor's religion or caste matter for an onscreen role? It's just something that he is portraying in reel life.  I don't think Lord Hanuman would have had a problem with a Sikh playing him on TV! It's the casting director who needs to mend his thoughts. Deepika Sinha,  Class X,  Bal Bharti School

It is pathetic that casting directors,  especially for small screen, give weight age to religion while choosing cast for mythological series. It is only just a role. Shreya Bhattacharya,  class VIII,  Millennium School,  Kolkata

It is silly that religion plays a role in deciding what role you will land up on the TV.  I don't think it is any of our business to know what is the actor's religion  in the first place. We attach way too much values to these roles and make them God figures.  Which is wrong.  They have a life beyond a TV series too. Akshay Anand, class X, DPS International, Mumbai.

Do You Think A Role (on TV, Theatre or the movies) Should Be Decided On The Basis Of A Person's Religion? Is It Fair On Our Part To Take These Roles So Seriously? Your Thoughts?

A person''s character or role cannot be determined on the basis of a religion because this creates a misunderstanding and disputes between the religions and also reduces the confidence of person and prevents him from developing in life and acts as a barrier always.

Shayon Upadhaya HANSRAJ MORARJI PUBLIC-ANDHERI-W

A role should be given on the basis of his/her talent and not on the basis of anyone''s religion. The roles should not be taken seriously as they are only for entertainment purpose and no one is supposed to hurt anyone''s feelings.A person becoming Ram should not be forced to adopt the habits which Lord Ram had.And we all know there is only a single religion which is ''HUMANITY''.

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

Roles should not be decided based on religion. Shows'' TRPs are based on acting quality and quality of the show, and basing it on religion is going to be taking a risk on money spent on making the show.

Darshil Shah ST. XAVIERS - LOYOLLA -2 LOYOLLA 2

Religion can surely not decide a person''s future and his chances of getting success. Believing in religion bias in these matters can affect the person''s mindset. So religion should not be taken in consideration while deciding a person''s talents.

Sarath Kumar RM Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Our roles in movies and other shows are just to entertain the viewers and we should not take those roles seriously.

Bhavana Jaison Atomic Energy Central School No 2

Religion and life is personal matters of every individual , so its not right for any one to commend on it.

Vishnu Varthan J Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

No the role in the flim is not based on religion. Forr instabce we have Mahabharat from star plus in that most of them are muslims. So one should see the views or the comments from the flims.

SHUBHAM BANSAL RYAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Role given on the basis of person''s religion should not be practiced. in TVs, theaters or movies , role should be given to a person on the basis of his talent and skill irrespective of his cast, religion, race, e.t.c. moreover, the role taken by the person of a religious deity should not be taken so seriously as they are only the actors spreading entertainment, information e.t.c.

Khushi Sharma BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

It is insensible to give a person a role on the basis of his/her religion, after all god is one. One cannot give the roles depending upon his religion many other essential factors could be considered while deciding the roles.

Riya Pandey Childrens academy

Of course, religion should not decide what role an individual plays. He or she can play any role he or she is fit for as it is a matter of talent not god and religion. Also ,we should not forget that it is just for entertainment and there is no use of taking them so-so seriously.

Dhruv Ranjan DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL (INDIRAPURAM)

Bringing out the differences in about one''s religion, caste or creed on a secular platform of acting, stage & drama is not at all justified. We recently saw the incidence of people questioning actor Nawazuddin Siddique''s role in this year''s Ramleela. But do we really have to look upon such issues that are way too petty against the National and global issues, India is facing today?

Aditi Sahi D C MODEL SCH PKL-SEC-7

It is so ridiculous even to imagine that role should be decided on basis of a persons religion,In India during ramleela the role of lord Rama is played by best actors irrespective of their religion.Talent not religion rules and we must not forgot religion is for humans, humans are not for religion. It is not fair to take these roles seriously, the actors who play these roles have personal life.

HIMANSHU SINGH OXFORD GREEN PUBLIC SCHOOL

I don''t think that a role should be decided on the basis of a person''s religion.Because we all are Indians and our identity is that we are the humen beings,so it is fair to take it seriously because our constitution provide us the right to equality and it should not require that a role should be decided on the basis of caste and religion. It may be dangerous for our country development and economy .

Kashish Verma Bharti Public School Swasthya Vihar

No, if we treat each other as brothers and sisters whatever, religion we belong to then, we should not decide the role on such basisu because India is one of the country who preaches brotherhood and integrity.

Ritvik Baweja Bal Bharati Public School

Everyone is engulfed in an patriarchal mindset ,due to which we often judge people according to their religion. I believe role should be assigned on the basis of talent and merit not on religion . The ideals of uniformity and equality should be upheld while giving role to the characters in a TV serial or movie.

KESA HAIDER MT. CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL

This should be done up to some extent only because sometimes actors are provided with exotic and high profile roles which are characteristics of a particular religion for example a role of a muslim priest who is a person with a perfect knowledge in urdu and arabic and of course with an impeccable urdu pronunciation,so in this case actor playing the role of the priest will be chosen by the virtue of his faithbut talent has no boundaries so therefore this too is not necessarily applicable.

Sanjula Gupta BHAWAN VIDYALAYA CHD-SEC-27

Of course not. The fact that I am a Hindu or a Muslim should not decide the roles that I play. And taking roles seriously is indeed very foolish.

A.Shajitha Fathima Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Religions are human created. So it doesn''t choose the role of a person.

A.Shajitha Fathima Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Nowadays the serial actors who play the main Hindu role are almost Muslim. So it is not important to know the religions.

DIWANSHI SHETIJA BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

NO,talent and religion should be treated differently.A person should be given roles according to his capabilities regardless their religion.

JIYA TOMAR B G S NATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

Not at all should this be the case of actor selection for a specific role in a soap opera or any movie. Religion or caste or creed does not determine one''s personality or caliber and everyone must be told the same thing so that people are not dominated either pre or post roles that they may play. Moreover they should be appreciated for their broad mindededness .

Pallavi singh PRESENTATION CONVENT(RED FORT)

Religion does not decide the role to play God is in everyone God is present in every human being therefore, anybody can be his imitation. God is the ultimate soul. It is we who have segregated his presence in the form of different religion.

Priyanshu Mohta Maxfort School - Rohini

No, religion does not decide the role one plays. It is the talent which decides ones role. They should not be taken religiously as they are only for entertainment and has nothing to do with religion.

Pragya RUKMINI DEVI PUB. SCHOOL(PITAMPURA)

A role should be decided on a person''s talent not religion.Rather than deciding the role on the basis of capabilities it is not fair to oppress a person on the basis of his or her religion as in this field what counts is talent and not religion .
