Paralympics Must Get Its Due; Say Youth Reporters

While most of us were cheering for PV Sindhu in her final match at the recently concluded Olympics at Rio,  there was a "strong" contingent of athletes who were preparing to face their luck at the same venue. The Indian Paralympics squad has never been so well trained,  so well prepped to tackle odds,  yet no one even reported about their departure.

What is Paralympics

By definition,  the Paralympics is sports for the physically handicapped. There are different degrees of handicap that is recognised by the committee but the difficulty level is the same across all contestants.

Emotionally Crippled

"Most of them cannot survive without caregivers and the committee doesn't allow everyone to be accompanied by one.  These athletes have never had international exposure so there are added health risks that they have to endure," coach Srikanth Saxena who manages race events, said.

Infrastructural Woes

Apart from emotional problems,  Saxena says lack of funding by the Government makes it impossible for the  athletes to be properly trained.  "There are no shoes,  no accessories that will equip them to perform better," he adds.

Yet this contingent has never let India down.  Last Paralympics, they returned with 139 medals!

Youth Reporters Suggest Ways To Get Paralympics In Focus

Even celebrated athletes in India do not get benefits like their international counterparts.  The Paralympics state is more pathetic.  There should be a dedicated budget separately for physically challenged athletes.  That will mean more money pumped into their training and welfare.

Sushant Singh,  class IX, Apeejay School

Apart from funds,  i think such athletes should be encouraged from their school level.  Adequate infrastructure is required for their training,  it's time the Government shifts attention to these Bravehearts.

Anjali Daman,  class X,  Somerville School

How about getting a celebrity ambassador as their official spokesperson.  I am sure someone like a Amitabh Bachchan or Aamir Khan will drive a lot of attention towards this contingent.  Why should these celebs be attached to only other sports and events?

Adhiraj Mehta,  class XII,  DPS,  Pune

The only way to encourage and support handicap athletes is by offering them world class equipments and providing them with life long security in terms of finances.  There is little being given and done for the uplift of such people.

giving them a place in the society as any normal human being and not treating them any different

While Olympics were being telecasted live why not Paralympics ? . Channels like Star Sports and DoorDarshan have telecasted Olympics live and what happened to them know ?This itself shows that India is not giving importance to Paralympics .We can''t even see and know when India gets a medal. We can''t congratulate or feel proud of them as soon as they get the medal.I request the government to please take it as a serious issue.

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

To highlight achievement if Paralympic Athletes, I think two things can be done. One, major news channels must highlight these just as they did for the Olympics. Two, these athletes must be given opportunities to play in intra-India championships of a similar format like the IPL or Pro-Kabbadi League, and again with adequate news coverage.

Priyanshi Banerjee Somerville school, Greater Noida

The only way to highlight achievements is by promoting the very fact that the loss of a limb is not a weakness but a strength!

Kashish Verma Bharti Public School Swasthya Vihar

When I told my friends about Paralympics I was shocked to know that most of them were unaware of it. So, first of all we should make all people aware about Paralympics with help of advertisements. After that, when we can put prizes for the winners of Olympics that why not for the winners of Paralympics. So, we should take steps to build people''s interest in Paralympics.

It is good to see encouragement given to them in India.

Khushi Sharma BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

The social medias were flooded with the news of Olympics but hardly a few are aware about Paralympics. We should be the seeds of change and should develop ours & should ask others to develop their interest in paralympics. The winners as well as the participants should be enlightened, applauded and motivated by the government and the citizens.

The same respect which is given to other athletes should also be given to the Paralympic athletes. Even if they are disabled but they are raising our flags high. More people should come out to support these games as well.

i would like to you to give same respect to handicap athletes .

Paralympics should be streamed live and media should spread more awareness. If the sports ministry popularises the Paralympic Athletes then I suppose it would get more attention.
