On World Oceans Day, Let's Take A Pledge

June 8 is celebrated as World Oceans Day across the world.

The focus, is primarily on preventing plastic pollution and cleaning the oceans of marine litter. Given that India is surrounded by water bodies on three sides — Arabian Sea (West), Indian Ocean (South) and Bay of Bengal (East) — many organisations and NGOs have organised activities in parts of South India where people are taking part in beach clean-up drives.

As a gesture of expressing their gratitude to the oceans, citizens will come to the sea and bow down to it. Closer home, lawyer Afroz Shah, the man behind the Versova beach clean-up drive, commemorated World Oceans Day by planting 500 coconut trees on the beach along with 1,000 volunteers, last Sunday. His long-term plan also includes recycling plastic products with the help of machines that will convert them to oil that can be used to fuel boats.

Why do we celebrate world ocean day?
To make people aware about the major role of oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe. To inform the public about the impact of human actions on the ocean. To guide and unite people how we can keep these oceans clean. Starting from the ground level by teaching them the Do’s and Don’ts of pollution free oceans. Also, to make people aware about sustainable management of the world’s ocean. To come together and celebrate the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the ocean.

India plans automated ocean pollution observation
India is all set to opt for automatic observation of pollution in the ocean to crunch data that will aid the tourism industry and could also come in handy in countering allegations levelled by developed nations against the country being a major polluter, according to a scientist. "We have proposed a completely new project to automatically observe pollution in the ocean and see whether we can mimic that observation using a mathematical model. We will use those observations to understand the processes which are going on in the coastal waters and provide an estimation of the water quality," S.S.C. Shenoi, Director, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Earth System Science Organisation, said.

Yes it is indeed nice . The pollution is increasing day by day and very few people think about cleaning the environment. If the ocans also become polluted the life in the water bodies would be destroyed. We must think about our oceans also

Yes, we should care for our oceans. These were the oceans where the first organism came to life on the Blue planet. The maritime routes and trade-links have contributed in the discovery of various nations. These were the oceans which act as a source of livelihood for millions of people. The day is not far when these oceans which account for paramount importance in our lives will perish. It''s high time now! We need to gear up and stop destroying such beautiful gifts of Nature.

We''ve to care for our oceans. The increasing pollution and the ill habits of man kind destroyed the beauties. Even the oil spill in Chennai killed many fishes, and it was very difficult to clean it. It is we who have to take care of oceans. Only them we can lead a happy life with the blue star.

Archisha Ghosh VIDYA VALLEY

I am happy that atlast people have drawn attention towards the cleaning of the oceans. People are becoming so careless about cleanliness. This official announcement could help about the pollution of the ocean. The ocean, our water source is getting so polluted that we cannot even assure ourselves that we are drinking safe water!
