Nine Things That Nine Lives Taught TOIStudents

In a new comedy, the Oscar-winning Kevin Spacey is trapped in a cat and must contend with being dressed up like a princess and having to relieve himself in private just because he has to prove himself to be a good father. Spacey in an interview had confided that he is a great dad in real life and it was a challenge for him to play this character who has little time for wife and a lovely daughter.

Earlier it was believed that "looking after children" was purely a mom's lookout but things are a changing everyday! Almost 35% of Indian dads in a recent survey said they would happily leave their jobs to take care of their kids. 12% of these dotting fathers said they would even consider voluntary retirement.

But is time the only thing that kids want from their fathers? TOIStudents certainly feel so.

Yes time is crucial. My father is a businesman but he always makes it a point to spend weekends at home. Coem what may, no one can disturb him on Sundays. Other days of the week, he is super busy and doesn't even take calls. But all is forgiven because we look forward to spending quality time with him on weekends and holidays.

Takeaways for me:

1) Spend a lot of time with family

2) Don't overstay at the workplace

3) Never miss your kids birthday

4) Try to avoid cats (dogs are a better pet)

5) Balance work with life always

6) Don't buy a gift just for the heck of it

7) As a pet, love your owners

8) There is a God watching you for your actions

9) Treat your kids with a lot of love and respect

My father is a very balanced person. He knows how to divide his work between work and family. But sometimes when there is a lot of pressure on him at the workfront, papa tends to ignore us. I am fine with it because I know this is only a phase which will pass by.

- Arindam Mukherjee, class XI, Kolkata

I have seen both sides of my father - he would either spend a lot of time with us or he would completetly forget about us. I can understand that there are days when the workload is more, but I would like to see my father balance his time a little more properly.

- Swastik Manik, class XII, Amity

Time is the most important thing that any father can give his child. It is everybody's due. If you don't get enough time with your dad, talk to him about it. Time spent with father is invaluable because he will teach you life lessons like no one else can.

What Our Counsellor Says

A message for all dads - spend quality time with your kids because that will truly never come back. You can shift jobs, loactions and even friends but your children are always there for you. I have seen many dads who give more weightage to their work over their wards. In such cases, the family suffers.

- Dr Meena Chaudhury, counsellor

Dad's The Word

I try to give 70% of my time to my kids. They need my guidance now and this time is not going to come back ever. I have a traveling job, but I make sure that I don't tire myself out before coming home.

- Rakesh Kapila, father of a 13 year old son.

My dad is very punctual and reliable. He always makes it a point to spend at least half an hour with us at the dining table at dinner. also on weekends he does not do any official work. He makes sure that he has enough time to look into our problems. He also discusses the day with us.
