Nasa Builds ‘Most Powerful Rocket Ever’ To Moon

Nasa has unveiled what it claims is the ‘most powerful rocket ever built’ — a 65-metre-tall rocket dubbed the Space Launch System (SLS). The rocket is designed to send humans back to the Moon as part of Nasa’s Artemis mission, which aims to launch in 2022.

This week, Nasa administrator Jim Bridenstine showed off the SLS’s core stage at Nasa’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. He said: “The completion of the SLS core stage is a major milestone and a testament to American enterprise and ingenuity. With more than 1,100 large and small businesses in 44 states contributing to the design and assembly, the SLS rocket will empower America to achieve the Artemis programme’s goal of landing the first woman and next man on the Moon by 2024.”

The rocket features some of the most sophisticated hardware ever built for spaceflight, according to Nasa.

John Honeycutt, the SLS programme manager, explained: “Earlier this year, Nasa revised its assembly plan to connect the stage horizontally rather than vertically. By doing so, Nasa advanced its timeline so that our teams could meet our goal to complete assembly on the core stage by year end.” In terms of timeline, Nasa aims to launch the SLS on an unmanned mission to the moon in 2020, before launching a manned flight around the moon in 2022.

Finally, it aims to land humans back on the moon in 2024. However, getting to the Moon is no mean feat, and requires a powerful rocket to accelerate a spacecraft fast enough to overcome the pull of Earth’s gravity.

When the SLS takes off, it will produce 8.8 million pounds of thrust — more power than any rocket ever before! If the launch to the Moon is a success, the SLS could could be used to send humans to Mars in near-future.
