N Murthy: Motivate Students To Innovate

On a visit to a school a few months ago, I asked a middle school student how much weight he could lift. He said 10 kg. I asked him if he could think of any place where he could lift about 60 kg of weight, or six times his capacity. He could not. I explained to him that he could do so on the moon because acceleration due to gravity on the moon is one-sixth that on Earth.

I asked his classmates a few more questions about nature — why the sun turns red while setting in the evening, why the sky is blue and whether space is sunlit or dark.

While children could recite, by heart, answers to traditional memory-oriented questions from the textbook, they just could not use the theory taught in school to answer any of these questions.

We still rely on rote learning: Memorising and rote learning is what we encourage our children to do in India. That is the tragedy of our educational system. Today, our focus is on helping children pass examinations by memorising what is taught in schools. That is why India has not invented anything worthwhile in the last 700 years even though we have lots of smart youngsters.

How schools can make a difference

1 The first step in our science and mathematics education should be to understand natural phenomena using theory. Such an objective will require us to adopt a pedagogy that will make children curious about the things around them. That will also force our teachers to constantly up-skill themselves. Understanding nature by using theories from subjects like physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology is the first step to solving problems posed by the limitations of nature. That is how telephone, TV, cars, blood pressure monitors and internet were invented.

2 We have to inculcate courage to use common sense, courage to be bold in walking the untrodden path, courage not to be afraid of failing, curiosity, and the ability to inculcate independent and critical thinking among our children. That will eventually help them attempt path-breaking inventions. Our examination system has to be reoriented towards this goal.

3 Our school system has to encourage our children to think, to imagine, to do mental simulations, and to ask questions. We must encourage them to look at nature around them and seek answers to their questions about nature. Building an ability in them to seek answers will lead to better inventions in India tomorrow. It is a matter of deep concern that India did not have any path-breaking inventions in the last 700 years. Before that, our forefathers were leaders in science, maths, surgery and astronomy. After all, India invented the decimal system, one of the most earth-shaking inventions of all time.

Yes , true . The nation needs an education system that stimulates, excites and motivates children to achieve knowledge and transport it to practical skill for the progress of the nation. Text book system should be scrapped off. Should be inspired to go for that extra leg that they feel will help them to improve their knowledge.

Our nation needs an education system which not only teaches the student about various subjects but also teaches the ideals and morals of our lives. Practical education is missing in India. In India students prefer to mug up and then answer the test whereas in the other countries students are encouraged and showed practical experiments and examples.
