Researchers in the US claim they have discovered the answer to the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. The area is notorious for (legend has it) the unusually high number of planes and ships that go missing there without trace
For decades, Bermuda Triangle — located between Miami, Puerto Rico and the island of Bermuda — has captured the human imagination with unexplained disappearances of ships, planes, and people. It is also known as the Devil’s Triangle. Popular culture has attributed various disappearances to the paranormal or activity by extraterrestrial beings.
The theory of "air bombs"
According to the new theory, clouds over the Bermuda Triangle are like “air bombs” strong enough to cause ship and plane wrecks. The strange “hexagonal” shaped clouds were discovered using radar satellite imagery, which were between 20 and 50 miles wide forming over the water. The research was revealed by Discovery Science channel’s, “What on Earth” series.
The remarkable new theory suggests the clouds are linked to 273 kilometre per hour "air bombs" — capable of bringing down planes and ships, meteorologists while speaking to the Science Channel's 'What on Earth' revealed their findings.

Meterologist Dr Randy Cerveny said, "The satellite imagery is really bizarre... the hexagonal shapes of the cloud formations. These types of hexagonal shapes in the ocean are in essence air bombs. They're formed by microbursts and are blasts of air.”
The blasts of air are so powerful they can reach 170 miles per hour (273 kmph) —a hurricane-like force easily capable of sinking ships and downing planes, the report said.
The mystery of the Bermuda Triangle has been going on for centuries and one of the spookiest stories is of Ellen Austin’s. She was on a ship going to New York in 1881. The crew on board this voyage saw an empty sail ahead and transferred some of its members on that ship to sail it to NY with them. Reportedly, the other ship suddenly disappeared, reappearing shortly after though without a single soul on board. Ellen Austin apparently turned around for London after seeing that.
However, some experts have disputed the claims. Others have pointed out that disappearances are "relatively insignificant" given the huge number of ships and aircraft that pass through the area.

The Methane Gas theory for disappearances of ships and planes in Bermuda Triangle was not much popular until 1998, when Dr. Ben Clennell of Leeds University England, delivered a lecture at Wales. His main discussion was on Methane gas becoming a big source of future energy. He mentioned that volumes of Methane gas can get released as a result of landslides under the ocean floor. He went on to state that in such an event, the water density in that area and right up to the surface can get so low that it can make a ship drop like a rock. And since the gas is highly combustible, an eruption can also cause a plane flying above it to catch fire and completely get destroyed.
