Japan launches ‘Space junk’ collector

Japan has launched a cargo ship bound for International Space Station (ISS), carrying a ‘space junk’ collector that was made with the help of a fishnet company. The cargo ship is also carrying other materials for ISS including batteries and drinking water for the astronauts living there.

Japanese way of cleaning: Japan’s space capsule Kounotori will experiment with a tether that uses Earth’s electromagnetic force to pull debris out of orbit.

Inside the capsule: The capsule, made with the help of a fishnet company is also carrying nearly five tons of food, water and six new lithium-ion batteries to power ISS’s solar power system.

The mechanism

How it works: Researchers are using a 700-metre metallic line called an ‘electrodynamic tether’, made from thin wires of stainless steel and aluminium. The idea is that one end of the strip will be attached to debris which can damage working equipment.

Idea is to burn debris: Electricity generated by the tether as it swings through Earth’s magnetic field is expected to have a slowing effect on space junk which should gradually pull it into a lower orbit. Eventually the capsule will enter Earth’s atmosphere burning up harmlessly long before it has a chance to crash to the planet's surface.

Orbital debris or ‘space junk’ consists of man-made objects which orbit Earth, and can be hazardous to active spacecraft.

There are over 20,000 pieces of space junk larger than a softball, and about 500,000 larger than a marble orbiting Earth.
