Is It A Good For ISRO To Launch Mission Venus?

If reports are to go by, Indian Space Research Organsiation (ISRO) is now planning a mission to Venus, after winning many accolades for its successful Mars mission. And it is not just Venus – ISRO plans to explore a certain asteroid as well. This news comes after ISRO had announced on July 13 that it is targetting up to 10 launches a year by 2016.

Why Venus: “Venus is our neighbour and has many scientific challenges and aspects that need to be studied. Exploring an asteroid is also a challenging task,” said ISRO chairman Kiran Kumar on India’s interest in the blue planet.

Mission Venus

  • Venus witnessed many failed attempts at missions. Some 20 have been successful. Listing two missions:
  • Akatsuki formerly known as Venus Climate Orbiter (VCO) and Planet-C, is a Japanese space probe intended to explore Venus. The mission reached Venus on Dec 7, 2010 but failed to enter the orbit around the planet.
  • Jan 27, 2017: ESA Mercury Orbiters and Lander are likely to make Venus flybys.

India’s last planetary mission, Mars Orbiter Mission was launched on Nov 5, 2013 and went into Mars orbit on Sept 24, 2014. It cost about $74 mn, or 11 per cent of the cost for NASA’s Maven probe. In comparison, 20th Century Fox spent $108 mn to make the film, ‘The Martian’.
