Internet Is All Bad. Let's Debate

Though many teachers and some parents still condemn it as a ‘distraction,’ pragmatic educators are now using the internet, especially social media, as a learning tool

Just because it is risky driving on the highways, doesn’t mean you stop driving altogether,” said Apurva Sethi, a 13 year-old student from Bengaluru in defence of the internet. Sethi has developed a Youtube video channel on how one can stay away from internet cookies and be safe in the virtual world. He was hooked to the web ever since he was six.

According to a study on internet behaviour, more than 42 per cent of the total number of users are in the 6-13 age group. The number has spiralled from a meagre 21 per cent of such users in 2013. Around 11 per cent of these young users actively participate in financial transactions on the internet (cyber economics). With free internet plans on the horizon, these numbers are likely to rise.

So, instead of trying to get kids to shut these out of their lives, it makes sense to try and reach kids through these platforms.

“Over 40 per cent of our daily users are pre-teens. They are mostly searching for “concepts”, “meanings of words,” “Wiki pages of popular personalities,” “new in the realm of science and technology,” “decoding religion” and so on. I don’t think it is a good idea to curb their curiosity,” said a Google spokesperson.

Whatsapp classes?
Educators must search for creative approaches to inspire learning. Instead of demonising the tool, they can use it to their advantage, and at the same time, show children how it can be used responsibly. Dr Sidharth Rao, a physics teacher at St Thomas Boys school in Goa shares lectures online. “Kids don’t enjoy reading material off a textbook. As they can access online tutorials on their phones, they’re able to review even when they’re on the move, which means they can go over the information more often,” he said.

Sunil Das, an economics teacher, conducts WhatsApp classes with his students at home. “The rules are  clear – any student who does not post a reply would be marked absent. The students were committed to their work,” he said.

Let Them Explore

Our lives have changed considerably — these changes are visible in lifestyles, parenting and mindsets — the education system must make room for these changes. You have to play in the turf of children.

It’s a good idea for the faculty to use hashtags to identify answers which have a common thread. This also allows students to establish a dialogue about their views on a topic. Kids relate to the subject more.

How to keep safe

I have developed an application called ‘netorians’ which teaches you how to set  a strong and safe password online. The app also deals with cyber bullying.

Imagining a life without internet would be really hard as you wouldn''t have e-mailing, chatting and not to forget, searching for information, places etc. Internet sure has many positives. Its your choice whether you make internet your friend or your downfall.

It doesn''t mean internet is bad if some or a few use it for bad purposes it has many uses like if you have some doubt first thing everyone do is to just browse it on Google and information is just in front of you.So, it''s good that everyone come to know the exact meaning of it.

Well I agree at internet and social media is a big distraction and is not safe enough..but that doesn''t mean we''ll stop using it. Parents should educate children and make them aware so that no one can harass or bully them.Internet is a really productive and helpful for growth and education, its all depends on how we use it

I think that it compleatly depends upon the user. Its his choices that he want to take it as a boon or a threat. I agree that internet and social media is a big distraction and is not safe enough..but that doesn''''t mean we''''ll stop using it. We must be aware about what will go in or against our favour. By the way Internet is a really productive and helpful for growth and education,....!!! its all depends on how we use it.

Like coin, internet too has it''s two sides....for example - most of us depend completely on internet for our homework Maybe we are getting to learn some new words or things but at the end of the day we are lacking behind in our creativity part . So it''s all upto the user how he is using it . I think one should have self control to avoid distractions or negative effects.
