In 2017, We Would Like To Change...

There were many events in 2016 that shouldn't have happened like trains accidents that claimed a lot of lives, the aftermath of demonetisation on the aam aadmi and the award wapasi which became a trend. We asked celebrities from all walks of life about the change they would like to bring about in 2017.

Celeb Speak

If I can change something, I would change the mindset of people who always take things in a negative manner.  There are always two perspectives to one thing - why can't we look at the positive one for a change.  That could bring peace in this world.
Sudha Murty, author

If I could change something that would be the way we treat our women at work. Equal pay, heavy-duty  roles and script-backed roles for them.  It's high time our industry recognised women.
Mahesh Bhatt, filmmaker

I think 2016 saw many good things happen,  student uprisings being one of them. If I could change something,  I would like to get into the minds of people who speak without knowing facts and change their way of looking at things.
Nandita Das, actor

I am ashamed of the fact that women are still unsafe in India. Society has done little to ensure their well-being. I would like to do something for this cause and I know active participation is what matters, so I will get up and there and voice my dissent.  That's my resolution for 2017.
Vir Das, stand-up comedian and actor

I would like to see more funds dedicated to sports in our country that has many talented athletes. There is so much talent in the offing, we need to hone each one of them.
Aamir Khan, actor

TOI student reporters tell us they want to be agents of change in 2017. What is it that they would like to change?

I would love to change certain things in our syllabus which I think are redundant. With time,  subjects need some overhaul and our Board should look into it.
Radhika Agarwal,  class XI,  Delhi Public School

I would like to change some subjects in our school and replace it with yoga. Physical exercise is much more important than lectures. It is a lifelong knowledge and skill that we need to begin at the school level.
Aditi Roy,  class XII,  Amity International School

I would like to change our canteen food and lift the ban on non-veg items being served there. I love my food but there is hardly anything nice to eat at school and I am forced to carry tiffin everyday. I am all for eating healthy, but can we have more options please.
Dhairya Chauhan, class VIII

I would like to change my parents mentality towards extra curriculars. They attach a lot of importance to grades still and that gives me a lot of stress.  Am very good in music but they don't seem to give it any weightage.
Ritika Ghosal,  class IX,  SMBN, Kolkata

If I could change something, it would be gender stereotyping, especially in schools. I can still see more preference given to boy students. So, I would like to change people's attitude towards the girl child. We are capable of much more than one can ever comprehend.
Shruti Singh,  class X,  Silver Oak
