HRD Min Prakash Javadekar Speaks To Times NIE

Times NIE has always tried to involve students, teachers and educators to debate on burning social issues that engulf the country. In an exclusive interaction with Deebashree Mohanty, the minister outlines his policies, vision and answers queries from students and teachers...

1 Tell us about Green Initiative: The initiative is to give our students the freedom to access the best labs and experts from higher institutions abroad for a period of one year in their five-year research programme.

2 Your “Idea of India”:  We have progressed a lot but there is still a long way to go. On 75th anniversary of our Independence in 2022, we must achieve a definitive target for India’s development. It can happen when people participate in the initiatives introduced by the govt.

3 Our students need freedom from... From parental pressure— Parent education is the need of the hour because they expect too much out of their child. Every child has special abilities and you must allow them to grow naturally.

Is detention going to solve any problems plaguing our education scenario?

Due to RTE (right to education), there is no detention, there is no accountability. Students are not interested because they know they will pass without much ado. The two-fold detention policy is going to increase accountability of all stakeholders – parents, students, teachers and schools.

SIMPLY COPING HOMEWORK SHOULD BE BANNED Assignments without any type of interactivity or homeworks with just coping from notes and just scribbling 5 to 10 times are none of the use for children. Homeworks should be of solving or searching answers from the textbook because by just scribbling we are only going to waste time and not be able to learn or do other things.

Students should get the feeling of gaining knowledge everyday. Marks should never be used to justify the knowledge of an individual. Government should make a proper and interactive education syllabus and curriculum so that students completely utilize their brains to learn new things . This kind of reform would surely make many brains who would develop the nation.
