Howrah Bridge Turns 75

The British-era Howrah Bridge — that serves as a crucial gateway to Kolkata — ferrying one lakh-plus vehicles and over 1.5 lakh pedestrians daily — is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Here are some interesting and lesser-known facts about the iconic structure...

  • One of the busiest bridges in the country, Howrah Bridge connects the twin cities of Kolkata (earlier known as Calcutta) and Howrah, on either side of River Hooghly in Bengal.
  • The 26,500-tonne structure, that finds mention in Rudyard Kipling’s works, was “thrown open to the public of Calcutta, as the city was then called, in the dead of night... a tramcar rolling down from the city end to the station,” says a commemorative coffee-table book ‘Howrah Bridge: An Icon in Steel’ brought out by Tata Steel.
  • It was renamed Rabindra Setu in 1965 after Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
  • The gigantic bridge, spread across the width of river Hooghly, does not have a single nut and screw joining the metallic structures. The unique bridge was built by riveting the whole structure, which means a metal piece (rivet) is used to connect two or more plates inserted through the hole in plates and pressed on the other side.
  • It’s the sixth longest bridge of its type in the world.

The 75 years old Howrah Bridge is truly an iconic structure that changed the outline of Kolkata. Having the spine of steel Howrah bridge is truly an indispensable part of Kolkata. Having survived the WW2 and even a Japanese air attack, I hope Howrah bridge continues to stand there for many more years to come, and continues to be a source of pride for the people of India.
