How To Survive A Long Queue

Lace up to brace the perils that can have you in dire straits, from minor irritants to serious situations. Here is the first on our ‘Survival Series’. Keep watching this space for more.

In a country famous for its huge population and expectedly long lines, finding yourself in a queue that’s slower than the adjacent queue is more norm than exception. The solution? There is no quick-fix but following these five tips may just help you survive the queue better than your co-sufferers.

  1. Start as early as much as is possible: For places like airport, railway station, passport office and such other places where you know that the later you reach the longer the line will you, it’s best to prioritise on reaching early, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
  2. Avoid shopping on weekend evenings: Supermarkets and brand stores will be crowded during weekends, more so in the evening. If you seriously dislike the queue, make an effort to shop on weekdays (when possible) and also in non-peak hours on weekends.

  3. Carry water and snacks: In places where you know that the line is going to be really long, make sure you carry a bottle of water and some non-fussy snacks like nuts, chips and sports bars. Feeling famished in queues adds to the frustration. And if you are feeling full, just chew some gum to pass time.

  4. Make smartphone your new BFF: Despite the usual irritants that happens because of smartphone use, it has made standing in queues so much more bearable. Read your emails, reply to those you have been thinking about writing to or just arrange the zillion pictures in your photo gallery that you keep clicking and saving and never delete. Now is the time! Plus, you can catch up on that show you missed last night and also download and check out the new apps. Thanks to technology, life’s not so bad after all.

  5. Chat with a fellow queue-sufferer: According to both research and common sense, sharing common pain such as standing endlessly in long and slow queues makes one feel better. Even mundane conversation about “why is it taking so long” or complaining about how the person in front of you is trying to elbow out another to reach the counter first is a temporary soul-soother.
(Some of these rules also apply to surviving the 9am metro rush)

Do you have ideas that can add to this list?  How do you endure long queues? What would you want us to write about next? Share it here in the comments section below.
