How To Make The Best From Adversity

Here are a few authors who shared what adversity taught them

After losing her husband in a treadmill accident, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg channelled her grief into her book, ‘Option B’; to help people tackle unexpected tragedies. Here are a few authors whose positive messages from their personal struggles have resonated with people

Paul Kalanithi

Book: ‘When Breath Becomes Air’
lesson: Life is a gift, cherish it.

There is never an easy way to speak about death, let alone face it. Kalanithi was an ambitious neurosurgeon when he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer aged 36 (and passed away a year later). Nevertheless, he wrote the book about his fight with the disease, digging resolutely into how confronting (and accepting) death can infuse life with meaning and purpose. The book offers an insider’s view of the grit required to pursue a career in medicine, along with thrilling information of just how amazing the human body can be. A  must read for future doctors!

Malala Yousafzai

book: ‘I Am Malala’
lesson: Stand up for what you believe in

Shot by a Taliban while returning from school, aged 14, Yousafzai made a miraculous recovery. The incident took her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations. The book tells us about Yousufzai’s journey and makes us believe that one person can change the course of history.

APJ Abdul Kalam

Book: ‘Wings of Fire’
Lesson: There is no substitute for hard work

Told simply, the story is of former Indian president APJ Abdul Kalam’s rise from obscurity, overcoming personal and professional struggles to hold one of the most important offices in India. No wonder the book has been translated  in over 13 languages!

Yuvraj Singh

Book: ‘The Test of My Life’
Lesson: The power of persistence

Yuvraj Singh was awarded the Player of the Tournament honour at World Cup 2011. And then came the news that he had been battling  cancer throughout the tournament. In this inspirational autobiography, Singh speaks of his journey from being one of the most successful cricketers to the horrors of chemotherapy, and then, surviving the pain to emerge victorious.
