How MPs Wasted Rs 194 Crore During Budget Session

Expected walkouts and repeated adjournments cost people a whopping Rs 194 crores till March 20th in the ongoing budget session as the productivity of the parliament are staring into the abyss.

According to government estimates in 2014, the functioning of the parliament takes Rs 2.5 lakh per minute and even if we go this estimate while trying to forget that Members of Parliament themselves had increased their salaries, the session till March 20th cost  Rs 252 crores with  both houses collectively sitting for 38.8 hours out of the 168 working hours which means that the Parliament only utilised  roughly Rs 58 crores  out of  Rs 252 crores spent.

It means to the logjam in the parliament did cost the people a hefty Rs 194 crores till March 20th and this amount is going to increase as the session is going to end on  April 6th. The budget session commenced on January 29th and is scheduled to end on April 6th with a 23 day period of recess. The first half ended on Feb 9th after 12 days of session and second half began on March 5th.

If we see the collective productivity of both houses in till  March 20th,  Loksabha has just functioned for 31.6 hours where as Rajya Sabha remained seated for 46 hours out of 168  hours, both the house was supposed to sit

While the deadlock is likely to  continue thanks to a slew of issues, some MPs have come with a suggestion that  MPs shouldn’t be paid for the hours wasted in the parliament.

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari in his letter to the speaker Mahajan had written, "I, therefore, propose deducting the salaries of MPs for their failure to engage in any constructive work. Let's follow the fair practice of no work, no pay," Tiwari wrote.

AAP MPs had also asked for the pay cuts if the parliament is stalled.

Hard to hear!! We common people work so hard throughout our lives to earn each rupee of ours, half of which we solemnly provide to the country, thinking that will be and is being used for the upliftment and development of the society. WHAT WASTE OF OUR LABOUR!! This is what prevents our country from prosperity and peace.

Yes there should be the no work, no pay structure. Really shameful to hear that MPs in the parliament are wasting money, without doing any constructive work. Condemn the MPs drawing tons of salaries, and wasting people''s money! It is a hindrance towards the country''s progress and development! Hoping next time during election proper and responsible MPs are elected......
