How Long Would It Take To Fall Through Earth?

For generations, physicists have been challenged to work out how long it would take to fall through a hole dug through the center of the Earth.  That is the focus of a new video from Life Noggin.

Of course, drilling a hole about 7,918 miles (12,742 kilometers) long through the Earth is virtually impossible. The Earth's core is about 9,000°F —as hot as the sun's surface— and would instantly roast anyone passing through it. Then there's the pressure, which can reach roughly three million times that on the Earth's surface and would crush you. No tunnelling equipment leave alone human can withstand such extreme pressure.

The video explains that the entire journey would take around 42 minutes, taking into account the constantly changing impact that gravity will have (and ignoring drag due to the presence of air) on the person falling.

Though last year, a researcher from McGill University, Canada published a different estimate. He claimed that the trip would actually take 38 minutes and 11 seconds— about 4 minutes faster than thought. But, don't expect anyone to test these calculations with a real tunnel through Earth anytime soon.  To this day the deepest artificial point on Earth is 12 kilometers. This means that we haven’t even scratched the surface.

This is really fascinating for me. The theory behind this is fascinating. No one would ever imagine it in such a short time. I am surprised that it can be a so short journey!

This is a very cool finding and I think the universe''s mysteries will never cease to amaze us. Hats off to the person who thought of this idea( which popped into my head too, like many others, I''m sure) and calculated the time it will take.

Our mother earth which has proved to be a shelter for billions of animals and plants species is an indispensable cause for our survival. Earlier scientist believed that earth doesn''t have a gravity and a man can fall from the edge, but this was proven wrong. Now due many technological advancements we have achieved this feat. With digging a tunnel through the surface we can actually reach the bottom of the earth through the top. Wow ! Isn''t it amazing.

Who wouldn''t be surprised by this calculation

the earth does not have equal density distribution, thus, the researcher from the McGill University might be more accurate. Also, general relativity and newtonian mechanics will give different results.

Archisha Ghosh, Vidyavalley School.Pune. The calculation is totally mathematical not practical. So if we take it only theoretical value it can be accepted as it is an ideal case. But I think after reaching at the centre of the Earth it is not possible to go downwards more to the another end of the tunnel as the gravitational force is maximum at the centre. Very exciting to feel it!!!

Humans have achieved much in the field of science .With their knowledge they are discovering and inventing new things which are really surprising. With this discovery a new mystery is revealed in front of us and in future I am sure more would be.

I thought it would take hundreds of years to do so.I am suprised by this calculation. The theory behind is fascinating
