Honour The Tricolour, Don't Litter

How often have we seen the national flag in the drain, inside dustbins and even on the road after every Independence and Republic Day celebration? But did you know it’s an offence to disrespect our national flag?

In fact, a few years ago, a student from Vadodara had written a letter to the district collector of his town to issue strict orders regarding the carelessness with which the flag was treated. PM Narendra Modi has on several occasions raised this issue. But unfortunately, nothing much has changed. Isn’t it a shame that the flag is trampled upon or driven over by cars at the end of the day?

So, it’s time to get things right this Independence Day and here's how...

The flag code of India

  • The Flag Code of India, 2002 is a compilation of all the laws, conventions, practices, instructions and guidelines that govern the display of the national flag.
  • The national flag should be rectangular in shape with a length to width ratio of 3:2.
  • There are various standard sizes of the national flag, prescribed by the Flag Code; citizens must choose an appropriate size for display.
  • The flag should not be used for commercial purposes.
  • The flag should not be dipped to salute any person.
  • The flag should not be used as a portion of a costume or uniform. It should not be embroidered or printed on cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins or any other dress material
  • No lettering of any kind should be put on the flag
  • A damaged or shabby flag should not be used
  • The flag should not be intentionally displayed with ‘saffron’ down

Avoid Plastic Choose Paper Flags

From time to time, the ministry of home affairs has advised people to avoid the use of plastic flags as they are not biodegradable like paper flags and hence, do not get decomposed. Moreover, ensuring the appropriate disposal of national flags made of plastic could compromise with the dignity of the flag. Flags made of paper can be used by the public but they should not be discarded or thrown on the ground after any event. Such flags are to be disposed of, in private, consistent with the dignity of the flag.

On January 23, 2004, the Supreme Court in a significant ruling had cited a new Fundamental Right that allowed every Indian to hoist the national flag on all days of the year. It gave its ruling while hearing a petition from Naveen Jindal, MP. Earlier, hoisting the Tricolour wasn’t allowed every day

The penalty

  • Insult to the national flag will attract a prison term of three yrs
  • As per Section 2 of ‘The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971’ – Whoever, in any public place or in any other place within public view, burns, mutilates, defaces, defiles, disfigures, destroys, tramples upon or otherwise shows disrespect to or brings into contempt (whether by words, either spoken or written, or by acts) the Indian national flag or any part of it, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with fine, or with both

Big Q: A matter of respect

  • According to the Flag Code of India, 2002, there are two ways to dispose off the national flag, either by burning or burying it
  • The right way to burn the national flag is to fold it well and place it in a fire with a sense of respect Remember, if the flags are directly burned without folding them or lit directly, it is considered to be a legal offence
  • According to the Flag Code, the flag cannot be torn, damaged, burnt, or disrespectful in any manner. The disposal of a flag should be done as a whole, in private, preferably by burning

Flag Facts

  • Pingali Venkayya designed an early version of the Tricolour. The present national flag is based on his design
  • On July 22, 1947, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Indian national flag in its current form during one of its meetings
  • On May 29, 1953, when Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay conquered Mt Everest for the first time, they hoisted the Indian flag along with the Union Jack and the flags of Nepal and the UN
  • Squardon Leader Rakesh Sharma took the Indian national flag to outer space when he became the first Indian national to fly into space in 1984

Very important article for every true citizens of India! I feel we will know it''s true value, when we go abroad and hold it in our hands. Hope atleast from this year people will respect our flag! Jai Hind!

It is a very important article. Really after every 15th August, and 26TH January, it is really horrifying and terrible to see the tricolour flooding the streets, drains, and dustbins. Is it not the pride of Indians? Is it not our national emblem? Is it not duty of every Indian citizen to respect the flag? I wonder whether people treat the flag as a toy. It is very shameful. Proper education is required about this issue

The government needs to enforce the punishments more strictly. We have to become more aware about this. After all it is question of the nation''s dignity

I also strong feel about this case I think govt has done right by setting a standard size and also use of paper flags as paper can be recycled and be used in a beneficial way or should be made of waste clothes.Plastic should be restricted as it is a non renewable resource and cause bio degradation.

The flag of India is the mark of India''s prosperity, india''s pride, it''s fame. It should not be disrespected by burning or tearing the fag of our country. Not only India but every country should implement laws on it.

Respecting our country is the first step that should be followed in order for a person to be a good citizen of India. A flag is not a toy. It is a mark that shows the independence of India .It shows the dignity , pride ,unity and diversity of India and its citizens. Every year the citizens of India themselves throw the Indian flag on the ground and after the day gets over the streets get strewn by the flags of India .Hopefully this the people are going to maintain the pride of our flag.

That was a much needed article NIE. While our utmost patriotism ends as soon as the clock strikes 12:00 on 15 AUG, what suffers is our motherland''s pride and dignity. Let us all try to safeguard our flag on the mornings of Wednesday when they will be lying around everywhere as mere pieces of paper.

Indeed, disrespecting the flag is a horrible crime. As Indians, we must respect the identity our flag gives us. It cant be just some rubbish in the drains. In fact, the flag code is there in many of the NCERT text books, which I believe is good as children can read and understand what you can and what you cant do with a flag.

Many a times, rogues and rowdies publicise their ''''patriotism'''' towards the country by putting the flag in unnecessary places. Auto drivers also hang it on theri autos. While this isn''t necessarily bad, instead of publicising patriotism, it is better if they contirbute towards the growth of the country and maintain cleanliness and work honestly, which many people lack.

The Indian National Flag is a symbol of national pride. Over the past few decades, several people have laid down their lives for the tricolor to be flying in full glory. On our national days we ride on the waves of patriotism. However, it is sad to see how people are enthusiastically buying flags and then disrespecting it by throwing it away. It is definitely a serious issue and a threat to the nation''s pride and respect. Awareness should be spread among the people regarding this issue!

On 14th of August we allbuy our national flags. On 15th August attache flags to our dress and hoist them. And on 16th of August they are there on floor This is not fair

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

May our Indian National Flay always fly high, may we the children of our Motherland reach glorious heights and make our country proud of ourselves!

Its an Important article.I think it should be circulated to house to house or from people to people or we can spread it through social media like Whatsapp Facebook Instagram in many languages so that people can read it and understand the importance of it.

Shivani A Amrita Vidyalayam -Nesapakkam

People might not do it intentionally but a lot of people disrespect the national flag. It must be treated with honour but we just toy with it. Students must mainly understand the pride and patriotism the tricolour carries with it as we use it the most and are the future.
