Hindi may be made compulsory till class X in CBSE schools: Is it the right move?

Schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Kendriya Vidyalayas may soon make the study of Hindi compulsory for students up to class X with recommendations of a parliamentary panel in this regard getting President Pranab Mukherjee’s “in- principle approval”. The HRD ministry has also been instructed to form a policy in consultation with the state governments to make the language compulsory.

How will it work?

  • Once the rule is enforced, students in CBSE schools  including those in southern states such as Telangana  and Andhra Pradesh  will have to mandatorily opt for Hindi instead of Sanskrit or a foreign language from class VI to class X.
  • Earlier, students had an option to choose between Hindi, Sanskrit or any other language as the third language from class VI to class VIII.

It is believed that introducing Hindi in schools can be an emotive issue as most states in India are drawn along linguistics lines. The choice of languages to be taught in schools varies from state to state. In the past, states like Tamil Nadu have witnessed violent protests against Hindi, the official language of the Indian govt.

1 The committee of Parliament on official languages made 117 suggestions to encourage the use of Hindi – most of these have been accepted by the President. One of them calls for fixing the broadcast duration of Hindi programmes on all Doordarshan centres and All India Radio stations

2 The panel also requested all dignitaries to deliver their speeches in Hindi if they can read and speak the language. President Mukherjee has also accepted the recommendation that said the government, wherever possible, should give all advertisements in Hindi and the regional languages

3 Another recommendation which wanted a minimum knowledge of Hindi to be one of the preconditions for a government job was turned down by the President

I feel this is not a good move . Students and even no one can be pressurised to do something. The earlier system was much better where there was a choice. At least in that case students could have opted for the subject they were comfortable with!
