Have Ideas To Solve Global Crises? Discuss

A Swedish philanthropist Laszlo Szombatfalvy is offering a $5 million prize for the best idea to create a new international decision-making system that can tackle the world’s intractable issues — from extreme poverty and the spread of nuclear weapons to growing environmental damage. Times NIE spoke to students on what they believe are the most grievous problems facing the world and how they could be handled. Read on...

Climate Change

Introduce carbon tax to prevent climate change

It’s  a well-known fact that climate change is the most dangerous threat the human race is facing at present. Lack of political will and major global agreements have either failed or are yet to be implemented at the ground level. I strongly feel there’s a strong need to impose a global tax on carbon emissions. This tax should be levied on fossil fuels such as coal or oil at the point of their extraction. The tax rate should be fixed by a world body, say, for instance, the UN and should be binding on all the member countries. This tax will make pollution expensive, and push the world towards a quick transition to more competitive clean energy and transport.

Terrorism

Introduce sound detonators

With global terrorism on the rise, it’s time the world took this issue seriously and came up with a mechanism to uproot it. We should introduce sound detonators, that will implode any kind of explosives. They can be deployed by using subsonic jets and drones in targeted areas.

Water woes

Recycle domestic and industrial water

Nearly one billion people from developing nations don’t have access to water. Recycling of domestic and industrial waste water could be a step towards solving the water crisis. By removing tiled, public and  private outdoor spaces, we could have access to ground water.

Water Scarcity

Encourage dry car washes

Do you know how much water is spent on washing our homes, cars, buses, etc? Plenty! The more things we own, the more water we use to wash them. One way to protect our precious water resources is to popularise dry car washes – that is, wash without water. This is a feasible solution that will help save millions of gallons of precious water resources. Also, the use of a dry cleaning machine that runs on solar power can save on electricity.

Lack of Education

Make education a basic right

It’s unfortunate that education remains out of reach for millions of children around the world. In both developing and developed countries, many children do not have access to basic education because of inequalities such as sex, health, religion, etc. Poverty is yet another cause. Access to education for one and all can only be feasible if it’s made a basic right. That can be achieved only when countries come together and agree upon it.

What’s the prize all about

  • The New Shape Prize, to be awarded next Nov, after entries close in May, aims to spur fresh thinking about means to solve problems. These are the problems that cross borders but are hard to tackle when most political terms of office are short and many businesses and markets remain focused on near-term gains.
  • The prize is not aimed at finding whole solutions to global threats such as climate change, wars and poverty. It is merely a model or mechanism that could provide the solutions.

Today’s risks are so dangerous and so global in their nature that they’ve outrun the international system’s ability to deal with them. We’re trying to solve today’s problems with yesterday’s tools. We believe a new shape of collaboration is needed to address the most critical challenges in our globalised world.

Laszlo Szombatfalvy, founder, Global Challenges Foundation

I would like to add on that one of the major global problem arising nowadays is growing Air Pollution. Not only in India but also in metropolitans like Beijing, Paris and other European cities Pollution along with Global warming is a major issue. To tackle this worsenn air quality some efficient steps like using natural gas in vehicles, car pooling and using Public transport. Not only till this extent but bringing out green buffer zones and reducing traffic on roads can help.

Robert Swan has very well said, "the greatest threat to the planet is the fact that someone else with save it." Today, our planets Earth is facing a myriads of problems and what we do is pass on the culpability. We have to stop being narcissistic. The world is not beseeching you. The threat is to your family, friends and to you. Harmony with nature is the need of the hour!

Good initiative. The citizens of the world need to join hands, unite, and cooperate to make the world a better place. We must keep our differences aside and work together to achieve common goals, and to resolve the current crises plaguing us.

Aadrit Banerjee Apeejay School Salt Lake

According to me removing terrorism is the need of the hour. It has to be uprooted from the grass level and I suppose it''s the time for all nations to join hands and rise against this serious issue. Besides using diplomatic means, countries have to ensure equality among different sections of the society and uphold the ideal of socialism. It shouldn''t be that a particular section of the society has access to everything while the other sections don''t. This is necessary to eradicate terrorism.

Ritvik Baweja BAL BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (PITAM PUR

Solution to each and every complex problem could Ony be found if the world joins hands together and work together in harmony. To achieve a similar goal peace and love should co- exist between any two nations.
