Gods Who Deserve Their Own Movies

Stories of deities and other larger-than-life mythological figures have been playing on the silver screen since the dawn of cinema, making Gods like Thor and Zeus household names. With ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ about to release, Shreya Sahai lists the other equally glorious Gods and Goddesses with superpowers

Thor of all stories

1.Thor Ragnarok’ marks the 55th anniversary of the debut of Thor (August 1962) and The Incredible Hulk (May 1962), as well as the centennial of their co-creator Jack Kirby.

2. According to Producer Kevin Feige, this film plays a significant role in setting up ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018).

Lady Sif

Who she is: Asgardian Goddess of war

As seen in: ‘Thor’, ‘Thor: The Dark World’

Why she deserves a solo run: Lady Sif, one of Thor’s fiercest friends and most loyal ally, dazzled us when we first met her in ‘Thor’. By the end of ‘Thor: The Dark World’ we were smitten with her powers. Played by Jaimie Alexande, this goddess of war would readily defy her king for her friends. We’ve seen her easily hold her own against all kids of foes with and without Thor, and it’s time for one of Asgard’s most formidable warriors to shine in her own film.

Loki Laufeyson

Who he is: Norse God of mischief

Seen in: ‘Thor’, ‘The Avengers’,

‘Thor: The Dark World’

Why he deserves a solo run: A bigger fan-favourite than his heroic adopted brother Thor, this supervillain is so good at being bad that he’s at the 8th position on IGN’s ‘Top 100 Villains’ list. Played to perfection by Tom Hiddleston, the charismatic mischief-maker will stop at nothing to get what he wants, not even making dubious deals with the enemy. Loki has given us some of the most memorable moments in each film he has appeared in, whether it’s being manhandled by Hulk in ‘The Avengers’ or dishing out the wittiest retorts. Why this show-stealer hasn’t been given his own show already is beyond us.

Hades

Who he is: Greek God of the underworld

As seen in: ‘Hercules’ (1997)

Why he deserves a solo run: The Lord of the underworld, Hades is witty, sarcastic, and mercurial to the point where he bursts into red flames in anger! With his bumbling minions, Pain and Panic, he dreams of usurping his brother Zeus and taking over Mount Olympus. Often lauded as one of Disney’s best villains, this suave schemer needs his own film: He may never be able to rule Olympus but he sure can rule the silver screens.

Horus

Who he is: Egyptian god of

the sky

As seen in: ‘Gods of Egypt’

Why he deserves a solo run: The youngest son of Osiris and Isis, this ancient Egyptian God was played by TV’s beloved Nicholas Coster-Waldau in the 2016 film. ‘Gods of Egypt’ may have attracted controversy and critics’ ire, but it definitely reignited interest in ancient Egypt. There are plenty of stories of Horus’ adventures in ancient folklore and mythology. Furthermore, he has also played an important role in both Marvel and DC universe. There’s evidently enough source material to fuel an entire franchise based on the falcon-headed God!

Hermes

Who he is: The Greek God of messengers, travelers, and thieves

As seen in: ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’

Why he deserves a solo run: This maverick son of Zeus was arguably the best part of ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’. Shown as an insightful yet funny divine messenger by Nathan Fillion, the character’s easy charm, slick style, and talking snakes made for an interesting modern-day update to the millennia-old deity. Furthermore, Greek mythology has plenty of source material to portray his cheeky exploits. Is this not reason enough to give the fastest Olympian a solo run?
