Goan Musician Composes Anthem For Red Planet

A 31-year-old Goan musician, Oscar Castellino, has composed a song for the Red Planet, called “Rise to Mars“.His creation has been named the “Mars Anthem“ by the Mars Society , the world's largest organisation for Mars.

The society , in association with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, organised a world premiere of “Rise to Mars“ on June 5 in Cardiff. The anthem, to be released online in July, will be performed by Castellino this September at the society's 20th annual convention, which has seen addresses by celebrities like Buzz Aldrin, the second man on moon and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, who is planning a colony on the Red Planet.

“I would not be surprised if Castellino's composition someday became the national anthem of the Free Martian Republic," said Dr Robert Zubrin, a former Lockheed Martin engineer and founderpresident of the Mars Society , who cowrote the lyrics.

Before coming in touch with British Indian soprano Patricia Rozario in 2011, Castellino worked as a software analyst in Mumbai. He then won a scholarship to Royal College of Music, performed at Queen Elizabeth's diamond jubilee celebration and has bagged numerous opera roles. A science graduate from Mumbai's St Xavier's College, Castellino currently studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. “My physics background and curiosity got me in touch with Dr Zubrin, the driving force behind Nasa's `Mars Direct' design. I decided to give it a shot after learning the society was looking for a Mars anthem,“ said Castellino.

“Though this isn't the first time someone has thought of a Mars anthem, but 'Rise to Mars' has a good chance of being the song for the ages. It is very inspiring, conveys the hopes of those reaching for Mars.“ Highlighting importance of an anthem for Mars, Zubrin said, “No movement of importance has ever got anywhere without a song." Castellino hopes his idol Buzz Aldrin will hear his anthem.
